Nasimiyu Aims To Break All The 'Rules'

When most think of the music associated with New Orleans, their thoughts more than likely will turn to jazz, brass bands and bounce music. But if you look a little deeper, it's easy to find that there's more to the local music scene than meets the eye. Singer Nasimiyu is out to expand people's perceptions, with a sound that is far from being definable. Although she's only been a Big Easy resident for three years, the Minneapolis native's music already bears flourishes of N.O.'s musical influences. On her latest song, "Rules Aren't Real," elements of the second-line brass band style and jazz intertwine themselves into the cadence of the drums, the punching of the horns and the smoothness of the upright bass. The video itself is also wrapped up in the city's haunting past, as a young boy wanders aimlessly around the post-Katrina New Orleans that often gets overlooked, with its housing projects and long-abandoned schools. While a violent confrontation with law enforcement leaves him with a broken skateboard and broken spirit, it also leads him to a creative awakening where he realizes that the rules don't always apply. "Rules Aren't Real" is featured on Nasimiyu's first full-length project, also by the same name, which drops June 29th on iTunes. To hear more of her funky soul-jazz-blues-folk hybrid, head over to her website and peep what she is bringing to the table. I know this is definitely an artist I'll be keeping an eye on in the future.
