The BET Awards '12 Honor Whitney Houston With A Fitting Tribute

The stars (and "stars") were out in full force Sunday night for the BET Awards '12, all in anticipation of an all-star Whitney Houston tribute. And we're glad to say, BET did deliver. From Mariah Carey opening the tribute with a touching reflection on Whitney, her gifts and their relationship, to Chaka Khan closing it out with a joyful "I'm Every Woman" (a song famously covered by Whitney in 1993), it was heartwarmingly heartbreaking -- a condensed musical version of her homegoing ceremony.

Monica honored Houston with a powerhouse performance of "I Love The Lord" (apparently also honoring the late Alexander McQueen with her dress), and Brandy was a ball of energy as she performed "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" in a look clearly inspired by the former's music video. At this point, actress Meagan Good was already holding back tears, but by the time Cissy Houston emerged to bravely sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in her daughter's memory, everyone from Beyoncé to Soulja Boy had them streaming freely down their faces.

Watch the emotional musical tributes, as well as the ladies of Waiting To Exhale (with a lovely Angela Bassett giving us her best Cornel West impression) saying their last goodbyes to a fallen legend. This alone is reason enough to celebrate the existence of the BET Awards.
