The list of new British female soul singers is growing by the week it seems. Doors were opened by the late, great Amy Winehouse, and of course we have the reigning queen Adele, but the likes of Emeli Sandé, Lianne La Havas, SoulBounce's 2012 Woman of the Year Jessie Ware, Natalie Duncan, Alice Russell, Andreya Triana and Josephine are all chomping at the bit to showcase their own particular brand of soul music. Well 2013 will see singer/songwriter Laura Mvula added to the list, as the critically-acclaimed chanteuse will release her debut album, Sing To The Moon, in March. She has already released the four-track She EP to rave reviews and comparisons to the likes of Winehouse and Adele, as well as Billie Holiday and Nina Simone (personally she reminds me a little of Lizz Wright). Are the comparisons accurate? Well we will leave that for you to decide, but there is certainly no denying the classically-trained musician has talent by the bucket load. Influenced by gospel music, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, and her time at the Birmingham Conservatoire, the ever-humble Mvula doesn't believe she possesses a great voice, but rather sees herself standing apart from her contemporaries based on the style of soul music she is creating. After taking a listen to her first single "She," which you can hear after the bounce, I'd agree with her latter point, but certainly not the former.
