I've already observed that late-night talk shows have stepped their game up with regard to booking hip hop and R&B talent for their coveted performance slots. Tuesday night was a perfect example of this with Kendrick Lamar blazing CBS' Late Show with David Letterman stage the same night as Tyler, the Creator brought his special brand of madness back to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on NBC. If you recall, Tyler made his network television debut on Fallon with a much-talked-about performance in 2011, so his return was highly anticipated and he performed two vastly different songs from his forthcoming album, Wolf. First, he was joined by a glammed up Coco from SoulBounce faves Quadron on the cut "TreeHome" that found a surprisingly subdued Tyler sitting at a grand piano banging out some notes while she sang with The Roots backing it all up. Tyler, the Creator is definitely not for me, but I will show up early for church to see Coco, so with her performing the bulk of "TreeHome" with little input from him, I was good to go. But that first act was short-lived, and after two minutes a couple of Odd Future goons trampled onto the stage -- and literally pushed Coco out of the way -- to join Tyler on "Domo 23," and I quickly lost interest. Their brand of hippity hop isn't my cup of tea, but the first half of the performance was enough to satisfy my thirst for good late-night entertainment.
