‘Say Yes’ To Ava DuVernay’s Latest Short

Ava DuVernay is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. Her feature films I Will Follow and Middle of Nowhere are beautifully nuanced works that showcase rarely seen slices of African-American life. And, earlier this year, her short film The Door, which was commissioned by fashion house Miu Miu, showcased her dynamic skill of telling a visual story while only allowing the music to do the talking. She returns to the same theme with her latest offering, Say Yes. Once again partnering with a brand, in this case Fashion Fair, DuVernay tells the tale of a woman who finds herself in a completely unexpected situation when she arrives home. To set the mood for the piece, the director chose three songs from some SB faves: Dotmatic's "Open," which features vocalist Lisa PrestonB.jamelle's "Rose Tea" and Bells Atlas' "Incessant Noise." According to accompanying text on the Vimeo page for DuVernay's African American Film Festival Releasing Movement, the film is an effort to show "what happens when you welcome the unexpected." Starring Kali Hawk, Lance Gross and a few more familiar faces (Lorraine Toussaint, N'Dambi and Awkward Black Girl's Issa Rae among them), Say Yes is yet another thoughtful, visually arresting film in what we hope will be a long line of work from DuVernay.
