Sam Smith Has 'Money On' His 'Mind'

Sam Smith is certainly one of 2013's biggest success stories. He went from relatively unknown vocalist to blog darling thanks to features on Disclosure's "Latch" and Naughty Boy's "La La La," he has released a handful of emotion-packed solo songs including his critically acclaimed Nirvana EP, he managed to make it into the studio alongside Disclosure, Nile Rodgers and his writing partner Jimmy Napes to record what should have been the summer smash (had it been released a few months earlier) "Together," and his UK tour, which begins in the spring, is already sold out at many venues. Now to celebrate inking a deal with Capitol Records in the US, Smith has unveiled what seems to be the lead single from his debut album, "Money On My Mind." More upbeat than his previous solo efforts, the track still features those distinctive, soulful vocals over the frenetic Two Inch Punch-produced track, but, as much as it pains me to say it, I'm not a fan of this track. The lyrics and production, while inoffensive, are a little bland and the ear-piercing hook is possibly one of the most annoying things I've heard all year. Still I'm sure this is just a slight misstep, and I'm still rooting for Sam to make the shortlist for the BBC's Sound of 2014.
