Pharrell's "Happy" passed the point of complete media saturation a while ago, yet the infectious song doesn't seem to be going anywhere nearly a year after its initial release. While TV performances, radio airplay, its inclusion in television commercials and its appearance on Pharrell's G I R L surely aren't hurting its chances at global domination, the song's malleability has also enhanced its appeal, allowing it to be the soundtrack for a good day or even an international protest anthem.
But also keeping the song alive are reinventions of the track being brought on by upstart producers, like this remix/mash-up that DJ100Proof has brought to the table. Marrying "Happy" with Fela Kuti's "Colonial Mentality" may seem crazy, but somehow the combination works. The latter's bass groove, piercing horn lines and shuffling rhythm compliment Skateboard P's falsetto rather nicely, but it's when the backing vocals of the chorus kick in and during the funky breakdown that things get really interesting. These parts fit together so well, in fact, that you'll forget that they're from two completely different wholes.
