April 19th is a special day for crate diggers and music connoisseurs alike as it is officially Record Store Day. Since its 2007 launch, the celebration of independent record stores and the artists they support has become a widespread event with tons of musicians releasing exclusive limited edition and never-before-released content for the occasion. This year a number of special collector's items ranging from the current likes of Jay Z and Disclosure to the classic cravings of rare live albums from Donny Hathaway and Jimi Hendrix will be released. But to whet our whistles before the big music event, Mayer Hawthorne and Tokyo-based artist, Shintaro Sakamoto are giving us a sneak peek to what they're adding to the pot luck "holiday."

In a split single, the two take to refixing each other's songs as Hawthorne adds his cool croon to Sakamoto's "In A Phantom Mood" and Sakamoto tries Hawthorne's Pharrell Williams-produced single "Wine Glass Woman" on for size. Nothing drastically changes except for the songs switching languages, but then again, the act of the Record Store Day, and music in general, is to bring the community and cultures together, and well, these two have certainly done that here.
To see if the record stores in your area are participating, be sure to check out the official site of Record Store Day for all the details as well as a comprehensive list of all the day's releases.
