If you're like me and came of age in the '90s, chances are you automatically associate Staten Island with Wu-Tang Clan. Singer-lyricist Ida Divine isn't too far off from that automatic correlation; her childhood best friend was Raekwon's sister. With that in mind, it's no surprise that hip hop is a major influence in Divine's music. And nowhere is it more evident than in her latest video, "Good Power." In it, she alternates between singing and rapping, often delivering a hybrid of the two in this celebration of womanhood. Heavy on the lyricism and message, Divine effortlessly rides this electro-influenced beat, slowly building momentum as her delivery speeds up. After walking down the street, she finds herself in front of a colorful Egyptian-inspired mural. There, she begins methodically cutting off her flowing locks, in what I interpreted as a freeing of herself from societal ideas of beauty. While "Good Power" was my first exposure to this talented artist, it certainly won't be my last.
