Jarell Perry Takes On A Timeless 'Taboo'

Jarell Perry Side Profile

Admittedly, I'd been sleeping on the talents of Jarell Perry. But then I stumbled across his version of "Blow" and went back to listen to his previous material, and I must say I'm quite impressed. But I'm even more impressed with his take on seminal Sade classic "The Sweetest Taboo." Being that Sade is one of those artists that you don't touch unless you're really going to do it justice, I was apprehensive at first. However, Jarell eased my fears with his minimalist take. Renaming it '"Taboo," Jarell simply pairs his vocals with spare synths and programmed drums to allow all the warmth and yearning of the lyrics to be felt solely through him, creating an enticing and heady version of the classic.  Some of the original's instrumentation is missed, sure, but for the most part, Jarell delivers the goods, making the mid-tempo quiet storm staple into an even more bedroom-friendly slow jam. Test out Jarell's version, and if you're so inclined, grab the free download of the track that he's offering up.
