With release of Michael Jackson's posthumous XSCAPE nearing and the official first single, "Love Never Felt So Good," already on the airwaves, the label has decided to release snippets of material from the eight-song set to build anticipation. First up is the 15-year-old MJ number "Chicago." The song, an outtake from the Invincible sessions written by Cory Rooney, finds MJ meeting whom he thinks might be the love of his life on his way to Chi-Town. Unfortunately, Michael soon finds out that ol' girl's leading a double life that includes a family and husband that she must've forgotten to tell him about. While Timbaland has updated the beat here to match the times — giving the song a nice little bounce with just a hint of hip-hop verve in the drums — Michael's vocals clearly give away the era in which they were recorded, fitting firmly in his mid- to late-'90s output (i.e. HIStory and Blood on the Dance Floor). So, while this isn't giving off the classic MJ vibes of the '70s and '80s, it's still a welcome visit to the land of what could've been if King Michael still reigned.
