Yasmin Green’s ‘Ticking’ Clock Is Running Out Of Time

It’s been almost a year since Yasmin Green had us grooving “Into the Night,” but her latest single "Ticking" is proof that she's been using her time wisely. The song marks the first release from her upcoming album, Ink: The Collection.

From the onset, the lilt of Yasmin’s melodic chanting coupled with the rhythmic marimba creates a tribal pulse that can be felt throughout the song. (Speaking of the marimba, can I just pause to appreciate the unconventional inclusion of the instrument? Like, seriously, how often do we hear that in music today?) For this piece in particular, her voice is like some empyreal blend of Lalah Hathaway and Lizz Wright. Her lower register isn’t just deep, it possesses a depth that is lush, inviting and warm. It’s like slipping into a hot, aromatic bath or savoring a warm cup of tea while wrapped in a fluffy blanket on a snowy day. My only gripe is that it’s entirely too short. I mean, a girl can only click “repeat” but so many times.

Here’s hoping that when Ink: The Collection is officially released, she includes an extended version of “Ticking.” In the meantime, heed my advice and head over to her SoundCloud page to hear more from this talented chanteuse. Trust me, it’s time well spent.
