I've been anticipating hearing Tony Allen's new album, Film of Life, in its entirety since I first heard the album's leading single "Go Back" over the summer. The music legend will finally release the new project on October 20th for all to enjoy. Film of Life is considered to be a self portrait of the music and life of the multi-talented drummer, composer and performer. And as one of the originators of Afrobeat and one of the world's greatest drummers, Allen will surely deliver a noteworthy album. To give a better sense of all that is in store for the project, Allen recently released two new songs.

In one of his new tunes, "Ire Omo," Allen collaborates with Adunni & Nefretiti, a Nigerian all-female folk singing group. Returning to his Afrobeat roots, "Ire Omo" is very reminiscent of Allen's days as the drummer for Africa 70 and Fela Kuti. The song is an upbeat jam full of Tony Allen's famous polyrhythmic percussion and a funky horn section mixed in with the harmonic voices of Adunni & Nefertiti.

The other newly released track, "Boat Journey," is a hypnotic and jazzy composition of bass and guitar weaved together with Allen's drums as the heartbeat. The song seems to be a continuation of Allen's message in "Go Back" to those who are in search of a new beginning in a new land. In the chorus, Allen warns his listeners to not take a boat journey across the ocean because running away from misery, "will find yourself in another double misery," as he puts it. It's an interesting commentary on the trials of immigration and the idea that life is not always as sweet as one would imagine on the other side of town or the world.
