London-based singer/producer Azekel first grabbed our attention in early 2013 with his standout track, “No Ordinary Love.” In the time since then, he’s released an EP, Circa, and generated some much warranted buzz this summer with tracks, “New Romance” and “Holy Matrimony.” Building on this musical momentum, he recently shared his latest single, “Chronophobia,” which is written, produced and mixed by the man himself.

While the title alludes to “the fear of time,” the track doesn’t feel rushed or chaotic. Starting out with a haunting chant and sonic bass, it immediately creates a feeling of being chased. The aural landscape is further enhanced by a muted count-off (“1, 2, 3, 4”) and steady drumbeat that almost permeates your soul, forcing your heartbeat to accept a new rhythm. As your head nods, the lyrics pierce your consciousness. “Time keeps passing by / Is it a year already? / My youth runs through my hands / It’s been two years already.” It’s a sobering thought that has crossed everyone’s mind at some point.

As the song progresses, the addition of jazzy horns (played by Sean Corby) take it to another level. Also, the “click-clock” sound effects from the tongue are a particularly effective and organic touch in the synth-laden composition. As for the vocals, Azekel’s falsetto drips with a beautifully aching quality reminiscent of James Blake. The way he stretches the word “slow” is a nuanced touch, and a mark of his attention to detail. We can’t wait to hear what’s next for this artist.
