The Weeknd Gets Upbeat With 'Can't Feel My Face'

A relatively upbeat song from The Weeknd? Who'd've thunk it? Usually all to happy to dwell in the moody and morose — and to good effect — the Canadian crooner seems downright happy...well, happy for him, on his latest single, "Can't Feel My Face." The track fakes us out with his usual minor chord melancholy as synths build and ebb at the track's beginning. But after a bit of inspired falsetto, the song's real groove kicks in and gets us moving. It's thick, '80s-inspired bass line and slight inflections of rhythm guitar will definitely have you moving toward the dance floor while Weeknd's vocal (which seems to be attempting to channel Michael Jackson) is probably the most fun he's ever sounded on record. Perhaps that's because he changed things up with this number and teamed with pop and dance producer Max Martin for the track.

The Weeknd is currently working on the follow-up to his debut studio album Kiss Land, and there's a good chance that "Can't Feel My Face" will be featured on it. As well, the track, which was debuted during a live performance at yesterday's Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, is available right now on iTunes. Are you ready to hear a new side of The Weeknd?
