DJ A1 Makes Some Changes Of His Own To Thundercat's 'Them Changes'

In a year full of great music, Thundercat's mini-album The Beyond/Where The Giants Roam is a project that stands out. Perhaps that's because it's chock full of experimental grooves that run the gamut from funk to R&B to soul to jazz (and, in some instances, that happens in just one song). While each song is a favorite, perhaps the one that gets the most burn is the set's lead single, "Them Changes." But we're not the only ones, Dallas' own DJ A1 has taken a shine to the song, it seems. So much so that he's decided to put his own spin on the track.

A1's flip keeps some of the song's signature elements intact. The sticky bass line is still there as is the wild flurry of piano that sets up the songs melody. However, the quiet storm R&B drums are gone, replaced by stuttering programmed percussion that's heavy on the hi-hat, giving the song an almost trap feel. Though it could veer completely into the "trap remix" territory, A1 keeps it soulful, adding a synth line into the mix that keeps things on the melodic side.

Like most of A1's choice flips, this one was done for the love. To that note, he's offering it up as a freebie. Check out the magic he works on "Them Changes" below and then be sure to scoop up your copy while supplies last.
