R. Kelly Wants Us To Do The Same Old Tired Two-Step At His 'Christmas Party'

There are a lot of horrible, no good and very bad things one can say about R. Kelly. But what you won't call him is inconsistent. Mr. Kelly has been joyously remaking the same song for the past 12 years. Released in 2003, “Step In the Name of Love,” is a lovely piece of music that celebrates Chicago’s stepping culture. In 2015, however, we are questioning how many times are we going to do the same old two-step? The R. basically remade "Step In the Name of Love" into “Backyard Party,” the first single to his upcoming album, The Buffet. Feeling festive, he has remade that song into the cleverly titled Yuletide carol, “Christmas Party.”

This isn’t even the first time R. Kelly has turned "Step In the Name of Love"  into a Christmas song. He remade the track into “Christmas, I’ll Be Steppin” for the Best Man Holiday Soundtrack. I mean, couldn’t we at least get “Step In the Name of Hanukkah” or maybe a “Kwanzaa Party?”  R. Kelly has more versions of “Step In the Name of Love” than Mr. C has remixes to the “Cha Cha Slide.” The song should have its own Time Life Collection, available at your local supermarket next to the discounted dented cans of peas and the kids’ shoes held together by a piece of cheap plastic.

With that said, the song isn’t bad. Kelly’s voice is as melodic as ever, and the beat is still perfect for your drunk aunt and uncle to show you how they used to get down back in the day without breaking a hip. In all honesty, it's great feel-good music, which is why the song has thrived this long. But like a joke that has run it’s course, and much of the Pied Piper of R&B’s stunts and shows, we’re smiling through the pain at this point. So come all ye faithful, joyful and indifferent, prepared to get your two-step or side-eye on this holiday, because wherever Christmas music is played, R. Kelly, with the gift that keeps on giving, will pop up unannounced to serenade you with the same old tired tune.
