Iman Europe has dropped some impressive remixes over the past couple of years. Whether covering Beyoncé, James Blake or even TLC, the Cali-by-way-of-NY artist manages to take a familiar song and make it sound like it was created just for her. So obviously, when she performs an original work, we already know that it's going to be worth a listen.
The self-described "half trill/half soulful" singer/songwriter recently dropped her first cut of 2016, a speculative ballad called "Studio." Written/arranged by Iman herself, the track is both lyrically and melodically engaging. Built upon a rhythmic bed of percussion (kick drum, drum-brushed snares and hi-hat), the J. Marcell production is a synthesis of sounds featuring astral synth, jazzy keys and muted horns. As the narrative unfolds, Iman's smoky voice embodies a range of emotions from innocent crush to alluring flirtation. She takes her time, weaving lush striations of harmony throughout the song and letting the music simmer while she begs the question, "Do you think of me when you're in the studio?"
