2013 should have been an amazing year for Sharon Jones. She and her band, The Dap-Kings, were preparing a brand new album and getting ready to kick off a tour in support of it. But then life came calling and things took a turn when Sharon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Rather than signaling the end, however, the diagnosis became another inspiring chapter in her story. Filmmaker Barbara Kopple turned her lens on Sharon to document what would become one of the most harrowing times of Sharon's life, creating the documentary Miss Sharon Jones!, and we have our first preview of the film with the premiere of the documentary's official trailer.
The trailer serves as a reintroduction to Sharon, hitting the highlights of her career thus far and the struggles she overcame to become a success. Then we see the heavy blow that was Sharon's cancer diagnosis. Though there are definitely tears and worries expressed, what the trailer really delivers is showing Sharon's resilience in the face life-altering news. We see her undergoing chemo with a smile on her face, singing in church and, with her freshly shaved head gleaming, rocking a stage in a packed concert hall for an adoring audience as she makes a triumphant return to the stage.
Though Sharon's cancer returned in 2015, she shows no signs of letting it slow her down or stop her shine. And, if the trailer is any indication, her story is definitely one we'll want to watch in theaters.
