In recent years, the term "Queen" has been thrown around the music biz far too recklessly. Thankfully, our true Queens are still alive and well (2016 tried it, though) including the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner. But let's rewind 20 years and revisit her 1996 album, Wildest Dreams.
Although the legendary performer maintained her popularity throughout the late eighties, this particular decade sparked a renewed interest in her music starting with her 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and followed by the 1993 biopic What's Love Got to Do with It, for which Tina recorded the platinum-selling soundtrack album. Further propelled by the distinction of performing the U2-penned theme song for 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye, the time was ripe for Tina to bless her fans with another album.
Now living abroad, she had achieved cult-like status overseas where Wildest Dreams sales far exceeded her U.S. numbers. Still, at almost 60 years old, Ms. Turner continued to impress American audiences by proving she could still seduce, inspire, strut and belt out vocals like none other. The inclusion of "GoldenEye," an electrifying cover of John Waite's "Missing You" and guest appearances by Barry White ("In Your Wildest Dreams") and Sting ("On Silent Wings") delighted fans and earned the album double platinum status in Europe and the U.K. By the new millennium, the 11-time GRAMMY winner would release her final solo album (Twenty Four Seven) and become a Guinness World Record holder with the distinction of selling more concert tickets than any other solo performer in music history. At present, the Queen is preparing for the 2018 premiere of TINA The Musical in London's West End Theatre.
