It's not everyday you walk into NPR headquarters and an artist stops her performance just to say an enthusiastic "hi!" to you. That's what happened when the SoulBounce team stopped by our favorite cubicle space to check out songstress Avery*Sunshine perform at Bob Boilen's eclectic desk. Avery, along with her band The Trustees, entertained the NPR crowd and its interns and had us rolling the entire time. The Atlanta-based songstress performed tracks from her latest album Twenty Sixty Four, a beautiful ode to her one-year young marriage to musical partner Dana "Big Dane" Johnson.
The ray of sunshine performed three tracks from the album including some of our faves and standouts, "Come Do Nothing," "The Ice Cream Song" and "Used Car." She peppered each song with hilarious descriptions of each one, cracking jokes like a seasoned comedian. In "Come Do Nothing," the songstress showed off her vocal chops, expertly blending the sweet ditty with Mary J. Blige's "Be Happy" and the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long." When she got to "Ice Cream Song," we were all primed and ready to groove with Avery and the crew. Avery had the audience feeling warm and fuzzy as she gushed over her bae, Big Dane, explaining that "Ice Cream Song" is their wedding song. After making us fall even deeper in love with the performing couple, Avery switched gears -- while Dane switched her keys -- to perform "Used Car," a song likening divorcees to used cars.
We loved every minute of Avery's performance and this for sure goes down as one of our favorite NPR Tiny Desk Concerts.
