DJ Spinna's Remix Brings 'Galactic Soul' To Ruth Koleva's 'Tokyo'

Earlier this year, Ruth Koleva gave us something to buzz about when she announced her forthcoming sophomore LP Confidence. Truth and delivered the project’s lead single “Tokyo.” The track marked a slight departure from her prior jazz-inflected/R&B leanings and offered a more experimental pop sound. But her honey-coated vocals remain steeped in soul, and we instantly connected with the new music. Now the Bounce-Worthy Bulgarian has teamed with another SoulBounce fave, DJ Spinna, to bring us a “Galactic Soul Remix” of the song that is beyond groovy.

Spinna gives us a preview of what’s to come with an extended intro brimming with varied textures of percussion and synth. Even with an uptick in tempo, Koleva is in no hurry, allowing her supple voice to have an almost hypnotic effect on the listener. The rhythmic contrast is just further evidence that the Brooklyn DJ is a master of his craft. Capping it all off is an injection of otherworldly funk courtesy of Space Jones on keys. Not only does it give the remix some added bite, it further entices us to stay on the dance floor for just a little while longer.

We’re a little bummed that Confidence. Truth has been pushed back to an autumn release, so this “Toyko” remix is right on time. While we wait, give album "Basil" a spin, too, and watch Ruth Koleva perform “Tokyo” live during a recent Sofar: Sofia session. Afterwards, head to iTunes to purchase the original version of “Tokyo,” DJ Spinna’s "Galactic Soul Remix" and “Basil” ahead of the full album premiere.
