The War And Treaty Take Us 'Down To The River'

Hip-hop and R&B might be the most dominant genres of music right now, but they aren't the only genres that Black artists use to express themselves. Blues, gospel, soul, bluegrass, country...you name it and African-Americans have performed it. Michigan-based duo The War and Treaty tapped into those sounds for their upcoming EP Down To The River and recently gave everyone a preview of what's to come on the EP with a video for the set's title track.

"Down To The River" is a down home, bluesy track on which the duo — which consists of Michael Trotter, Jr. and Tanya Blount — borrow the repetitive cadence of old-time spirituals and mix it with blues, rock and even a bit of country twang. All that combining seems to be the inspiration for the song's video. The visual seems to integrate images evoking both the early 20th century and the modern day, just as like the group's sound. It also seems to combine cultures, as people from all walks of life are represented. Though all seem decidedly different, the one thing that unites them all is the timeless sound of the song. Eventually, they all march down to the river in a united front and jump into its waters, awash in love and unity. The clip ends with a powerful quote from Michael, which reads, "We must wash away the pains from yesterday in order to bathe in the opportunity of togetherness that today is presenting not only to Americans but to our wonderful world."

The War and Treaty will further spread their sound and message when Down To The River arrives this Friday (July 21st). You can pre-order the album and even get a few perks like merchandise, concert tickets and much more right now via their Indiegogo campaign, which the independent artists have put together in order to help finance a tour behind the project.
