Bassist/singer/songwriter Thundercat has been extremely busy this year. Back in April, he wrapped up a whopping 42-date world tour in support of his third full-length album Drunk, which was released in February. Now, as he gets set to kick off another 45-date run, we wonder when he had time to shoot his new video, although we are certainly glad he did. The visual accompanies the track “Tokyo,” and it is everything we thought it would be. While listening to the ode to his one of his favorite cities, we are mentally transported to the bustling city full of quirky coolness. We envision and begin to daydream about everything he mentions in the lyrics, from Japanese anime to sushi and we “wanna hear all the sounds and see all the sights/From the Champ-Elysees to the Gundam Café.”
The video, directed by Jun Hanamoto-Hearn, brings all of the images dancing in our heads to life. Its home video-style captures both Thundercat’s excitement and the energy of the city. We ride along with him as he visits an arcade, see plenty of proof of his love for Dragon Ball Z and chuckle as he gets raw fish to sing along to one of our favorite tracks from the album. His beloved cat Tron even joins in all the fun, making a cameo appearance along with several other feline friends. Thundercat’s videos always make us laugh and feel good, and his latest offering is no different.
See Japan’s capital city through the eyes of Thundercat in his video for “Tokyo” below. He’ll be on the road through the end of November, with his next run kicking off on August 12th in San Francisco. In addition to a performance at the AFROPUNK Brooklyn Festival and Atlanta’s ONE MusicFest, Thundercat will make his rounds through all four corners of the country before heading across the pond for the remaining 11 dates in November.
