VH1's 2008 Hip Hop Honors Is In the Can, Live-Blog Monday Night Is In the Plan

slick_rick_hip_hip_honors.jpgWhile most of us were glued to our television screens last night watching the Joe Biden/Blinking Barbie debate, it was going down in New York City at the taping of VH1's 2008 Hip Hop Honors. Although we won't get to see the telecast until Monday, October 6th, VH1.com has a ton of photos from the event posted online from the red carpet to the after party. Check 'em out to see Eve biting Miss Jack Davey's hair swag, past honorees Q-Tip and MC Lyte looking like they're going to a Hip Hop prom (they look cute together, no?) and honorees Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, Slick Rick and Too $hort getting it in on stage. Word has it that the show was on point yet again.

And because I love y'all like play cousins, I will be live-blogging the festivities like I did last year starting Monday night at 10 PM EST. Mark your calendars and get ready to cut up in the comments section. You've been warned.

Tune In TONIGHT! SoulBounce to Live-Blog the 2008 MTV VMA's

mtv_vma_2008.jpgAgainst my better judgment, I, Butta, have made an 11th hour decision to live-blog the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. This will be my first time live-blogging any fare from MTV for SoulBounce, because, in all honesty, they cater to a different audience than we do. But with guests such as John Legend, Lupe Fiasco and Leona Lewis scheduled to appear alongside Ciara, Lil Wayne and T-Pain, the potential for some uckeryfay to pop off is so there. And with Kanye West ending his three-minute boycott and closing the show with a new song, it will be worth watching just to see what he comes with. I'm praying for a hissy fit!

Come back tonight around 8 PM EST for my loose red carpet coverage, then the real party starts at 9 PM. Now let me go get my mind right for what I'll be subjecting myself to this evening. The things I do for you all! Remember this at Christmas.

Let's All Welcome Our New Editor!

Thumbnail image for rosoulbounce.jpgAfter a strenuous, touch-and-go, nationwide talent search, I am giddy to report we are fully-staffed (for the time being)! Many of you may have noticed a new regular poster that goes by "Ro." Her contributions thus far have suited the texture of the site nicely, and she brings a true understanding of "Soul" as well as some interesting items I never would've been able to find on my own. Check out her archives, which are already gaining momentum and show love. She counts Maxwell, Strange Fruit Project, The Roots, Rahsaan Patterson, Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson among her faves, so she's cool with me! Learn more about Ro on our Staff Page.

Reader Tip: How To Comment on SoulBounce

feedback.jpgSince you are a guest here and we'd love to have you back, here's a shortlist of things to keep in mind when contributing to the discourse on SoulBounce.com. These guidelines were established to enhance your experience, not restrict it.

  • Using profanity may throw your comment into moderation and it will sit there until someone approves it. This is because a good amount of spam employs unseemly language and we'd rather be safe than sorry.
  • Same for hyperlinks, in some cases.
  • No personal attacks on other commenters.
  • Please do not leave comments that are so blatantly self-promotional they are virtually off-topic.
  • If you absolutely must insult an artist, be funny and clever.
  • Disagree respectfully and criticize constructively.
  • The comments section isn't a proper means of "contacting" the staff of this site. When speaking to a team member in a manner that is better suited for a one-on-one conversation, reconsider leaving your comment.
  • You are entitled to your opinion, but do not overestimate the utility of your feedback.
  • Racist, sexist, homophobic and any other comments of that nature are a major no-no!
  • In general, we like our feedback to reflect an intelligent, mature, and savvy readership. StIcKy cApS, horrendous grammar/spelling, excessive profanity, and needlessly emotional verbage really drag down the quality of the site.
  • Audio files are archived for a limited time. Please don't ask for them or report "broken links."
  • We reserve the right to respond to comments/commenters, delete comments or ban users based on but not limited to the preceding criteria.
For any concerns, questions, or general cursing out, please send an email to soulbounceonline@gmail.com. Otherwise, keep bouncin'!

We Want YOUR Concert Reviews and Photos!

(L-R: Butta, Anthony David, Vivrant Thang, nOvaMatic, Sweetlips)

One of the most brilliant ideas to come to us via our survey was the suggestion that we have readers submit concert reviews and experiences. This is pretty ingenious since Your Friendly SoulBounce Editors can't be everywhere all the time. Also, we're broke. So now is your time to shine! If you met an artist at a recent event (and can prove it with photographic evidence) or you want to let us know who really did the damn thing at a concert, shoot us an email at iwasthere@soulbounce.com! Hit the SoulBounce Events Calendar to find out who's doing what and where. Also, consider joining our Flickr pool to upload some photos of you and your crew out being "neo-social." If you have any questions or concerns about this new business we're embarking on, leave 'em in the comments and I'll respond fast-like!

Join In On The Fun: BET Awards Live-Blog TONIGHT!

bet_awards_2008.jpgIt's been a while since I've done one of these live-blogs, so what better way to jump back in the game than with a play-by-play of all of the tomfoolery that only the BET Awards '08 can provide! Yes, yes, y'all, I will be subjecting myself to Black Star Power an assorted bag of nuts (Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Nelly, et al) for the greater good of humanity...or at least the SoulBounce audience. Who loves ya, baby?

Come back tonight at 8 PM EST and keep it locked on SoulBounce for my comedic commentary on all the madness that will surely unfold tonight. Don't let me down, BET!

Artist Tip: How to Submit Music to SoulBounce

singlemic.jpgWe've been getting this question a lot lately, and although we have a few guidelines on the "Contact" page, we thought it would be a good idea to expand on it.

We love introducing our readers to new artists, whether they're underground, independent, or freshly-signed. But every artist, regardless of what stage they're at in their career, must follow the same process.

We will not accept any audio without preamble. We must be introduced to an artist via a proper press release or write-up that includes the artist's URL, photos, and an mp3 or two. The written copy can include a brief bio, influences, planned release date, accomplishments like guest vocals or performances, and/or any current or future plans. It is essential that you provide our team with as many resources and information as possible so that we can immerse ourselves in the artist/music to write our recommendation with familiarity and authority. We'd like to be able to write about a new artist that we're excited about as if s/he's been around for years. We do not manufacture hype.

If a full album is available for evaluation, one of our editors will request a copy. You will be provided with a mailing address if your only option is to send a physical copy. Please keep in mind that we will produce content about you/your artist as our will dictates.

Blog for SoulBounce.com!

nOva, your friendly SB HNIC, is currently looking for 1 or 2 bloggers to join us in keeping the site fresh and new by beefing up our basic updates during the day.

What/Who we are not looking for at this time:
  • Long-form entries that take hours-days to complete.
  • Long-windedness and purple prose.
  • Nostalgia. This opening is specifically for updates on "the now."
  • Someone without a sense of humor or an affection for the music/artists we cover.
  • Someone that doesn't have the time.

We're certain the ideal person will have:
  • Knowledge of HTML and image-editing.
  • Familiarity with blogging platforms.
  • The ability to update multiple times per day during the waking hours.
  • An awareness of music from different eras and genres, particularly if you're able to recall historical milestones in music, production credits, etc.
  • Conversational, entertaining or witty writing style. We are not looking for "journalism".
  • Familiarity with using RSS feeds, Google Alerts and other resources.
  • The ability to self-edit (spelling and grammar), fact-check and cite your sources independently.
  • The ability to follow existing formatting guidelines, style and procedures already in use at SoulBounce.com. We are not looking for someone to come in and "shake things up".
  • A thick skin.

If you're serious about being a part of our team, please email your letter of interest including a link to your blog and the names of your favorite artists to novaslim@gmail.com. Please attach 3 publishable entries demonstrating the style, focus and formatting of our site in order to be considered. The new editor will be able to participate in sharing site revenue provided they are a match. Also, he or she will be working directly under me.

Let your nightmare begin.

Maxwell Hearts SoulBounce

maxwell_red.jpg

As much as we sweat stan talk about Maxwell on SoulBounce, we'd be remiss not to mention that he has shouted us out on his MySpace page. Yes, yes, y'all! We already had a sneaking suspicion that he read SoulBounce, but to get this confirmation from the man himself was incredible. I know that we tend to give him a hard time here at SB, but it's only because we love Maxwell like we do. If we didn't care for the dude you wouldn't see his name around these parts at all or very little. Nonetheless, for him to publicly acknowledge us alongside a select few on his MySpace page is kinda fly.

Regarding what Maxwell is up to right now, he's going into deep cover mode to finish up the album. There's still no release date, but it really is coming soon so be patient, people. And he even suggested to the ladies that they start getting right for his concert tour and told the fellas to get ready to seal the deal after he provides the foreplay. Lord. Have. Mercy. Swing low sweet chariot and carry me home! Check out Max's statement including our shout out after the bounce.
