Erykah's Vortex Tour Poster Is Here

vortex_tour_poster.jpg
After seeing the beautiful work of artist E.M.E.K. on Erykah Badu's previous tour posters for her international dates, comes the US tour poster for her current US tour with The Roots. A bit of discolsure: I am an unapologetic Erykah stan, and I have another 34 days until she descends upon Los Angeles. I absolutely cannot wait! Those who have not peeped the list of concert dates, we've got you covered right here. To view all of E.M.E.K.'s Erykah works (for all you stans), it's right here

New Erykah Badu Tour Poster & More Tour Dates

Erykah Badu and EMEK have not failed to represent when it comes to the collaboration on her tour poster designs. Thus far, the tour posters for her Israel and Nigeria tour dates have been visually dope and left us feenin' for more. The poster (clickable) for her April 19th stop in Moscow, Russia is displayed at left, and it is fiyah! We're loving the rework of the old communist posters, and with Erykah's massive afro and fists pumping towards her in unison, it just takes the theme of power to the people to a whole other level.

By now, many of you have been scouring the internet to find out if Erykah will be blessing your hometown with some of her musical love. The previous trickle of released tour dates was posted here on SoulBounce, but the complete list was still as elusive as what Erykah has up under that 'fro of hers. But never fear: the complete list of tour dates, in case you haven't gotten hip to them yet, is after the bounce.

Erykah Badu's Nigeria Poster

badu_nigeria.jpg Erykah Badu has been kicking it hard in warmer climes, such as Israel where she recently performed in Tel Aviv in promotion of her forthcoming album New AmErykah. This Sunday's concert in Lagos, Nigeria will likely be just as stirring as her concert in Tel Aviv a couple of weeks ago, and has yet another slick poster to promote the show. This poster, though not done by EMEK, the artist who has also designed New AmErykah's cover as well as the Tel Aviv concert poster, features a Ms. Badu of ages past with her then-trademark headwrap. Glad to see Erykah's interested in presenting the public a total package that is consistent with the meticulous way she has attempted to present her own self since she debuted almost twelve years ago.

Retro-Futurey!

kanye-tour-poster.jpgHere's the bright, shiny poster for Kanye West's "Glow in the Dark" tour (click to enlarge), that employs the same retro-futurism that has been his visual identity since the course of The Graduation began. At once we recognize how the typography and double-border recall old Star Wars posters, but beyond that there's the rendering of the Louis Vuitton Don himself, which is a bizarre mix of the T-1000 and all those hokey experiments by Vera and Ross Webster in Superman III, which many of us regret ever seeing.

The inclusion of N*E*R*D and Lupe Fiasco on the tour was to be expected and hopefully there will be some serious CRS action on stage. But we have to unleash SIDE-EYE 2.0 because one of these things is not like the other. Perhaps recent Bad Boy signee Janelle Monae might've been a more logical choice?

Erykah Badu's Israel Tour Poster

e_badu_poster.jpg

As we wait with baited breath for every tidbit of information related to anything having to do with next month's release of New AmErykah (including the "Honey" video we posted yesterday), we present to you the concert poster for her Tel Aviv, Israel show on February 2, 2008. In keeping with the "let's cram as many cryptic symbols as we can" vibe also displayed on the album's artwork, it's nice to see Erykah leading the way to the resurgence of the lost art of cover and poster artistry.

All three versions of the poster can be found here

Dig If You Will The Artwork Of Demont Peekaso

deemont_peekaso_com.jpg
Anyone who has bought a Raheem DeVaughn CD or been to one of his concerts is already familiar with the work of artist Demont Peekaso. His artwork graced the cover of DeVaughn's debut CD The Love Experience, and Peekaso tours with him as a member of the band, painting live on stage while Raheem sings.

To see this man in action is truly amazing. At DeVaughn's recent Washington, D.C. concert, Peekaso finished not one but two paintings during the almost 90-minute set. We really don't know why we're shocked, however, seeing that we've witnessed Peekaso paint a mural during another concert. This brotha is bad. We don't know how he does what he does, but he produces one-of-a-kind visual masterpieces on the regular.

Wild Stylin' On 'Em

wildstyle_sept14.jpgMy apologies for not getting this event review posted sooner, but I've been so busy grooving to all this free music that we've been sharing with you all. However, I've put my fliTunes on pause long enough to provide a recap of what went down last Friday evening at the Wild Style book signing and photo exhibition at the Dissident Display Gallery in Washington, D.C.

To the uninformed, Wild Style is the legendary 1982 movie that captured hip-hop in its infancy and documented the intersection of DJing, MCing, b-boying and graffiti writing. Fab Five Freddy, Grandmaster Flash, Chief Rocker Busy Bee and Lee Quinones played characters in the fictional flick set in the Boogie Down Bronx and written/directed/produced by Charlie Ahearn. Twenty-five years later the film is enjoying a renaissance of sorts by being one of the honorees at this year's VH1 Hip Hop Honors and with the release of the coffee table book Wild Style: The Sampler.

So when DJ Stylus sent us the above invitation to the exhibition, I had to go represent for SoulBounce.
