Eric Roberson Waxes Poetic
Yesterday Eric Roberson posted a poem on his blog that sums up what many of us think about the music industry as we know it. He let his pen just cry away and crafted a brilliant piece entitled "If I Controlled It." With lines like "turn off auto tune/and show all flaws" and "i would demand/each a&r/be a music fan/be about respect/before ur check," this could be the SoulBounce Pledge.

Madness and Chicanery Unfold at the Sharon Jones Show!
"Vivrant Thang", one of our Official Bouncers, has penned a thrilling, eye-opening account of her experience at the recent Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings concert here in DC. As a summary, the very "diverse" crowd couldn't handle their liquor and the act herself had to intervene more than once. Thing is, this isn't metal. It's Sharon Jones! 'Bows were thrown and Bonecrusher wasn't even in the house! They were "dancing" wildly and roughly bumping into me hard so that I was being pushed into the person next to me...while I was holding my precious camera. Remember, I'm a lover not a fighter so I tried several approaches before I completely lost it and and pushed back...hard. They were too drunk to really notice.
Sharon Jones to the rescue!
And it gets worse, or better if you're running a music blog called SoulBounce and find these things to be entertaining fodder on a slow news day (sorry, Viv!). Also, our lovely bouncer has posted a nice collection of Youtube clips from the performance. I'm so jealous. Or maybe not, because I woulda shot somebody if I'd been there.

BlogBeat: Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, 'Barney Miller'
Not only do your friendly SoulBounce Editors talk about music here, but we do it on our personal blogs, too. Check out some recent posts we've written about Janet Jackson's "Feedback", a Jill Scott sighting and that funky Barney Miller theme music.
"What I don't understand are the apologists for this video that are calling it "European" like the rest of the world is too stupid and uncultured to get it. Why is it that anytime something is avant garde or hard to explain, people jump to "European"? "European" would be a sad clown kicking a ball across the stage for an hour with a leaky faucet in the background. This video is foolish, not "European"." [nOva]

BlogBeat: Recalling Aaliyah's #1 Hit
"Betwixt serpentine metallic-synth strands, a thunderclap drum beat and
creepy wails seemingly echoing from the bowels of Hell, we enter the
thoughts of Aaliyah as her ears are being bombarded with the mouthpiece
from some slick-tongued player. Fully aware that he's already got a
girl at home, Aaliyah lets her mind wander on what homegirl would think
if she knew what her man was doing ("If your girl only knew/ That you
was trying to get with me/ (What would she do?)". While amused by her
imagination's vividness ("She would probably curse you out and unplug
her phone," she smirks), the singer also holds some guilt of her own,
recognizing that her slight interest in dude implicates her as an equal
partner in his betrayal." [90's R&B Junkie]

BlogBeat: A Spin on Reality
"I wouldn't say that I'm addicted to The Salt-N-Pepa show on VH1, though I do have my DVR set to tape every episode. What's been interesting about VH1 and its reality shows has been the ability to cast artists (music, film, TV) from a time not so long ago, that resonates (and deeply I might add) with the 30 and over set...Anyway, as far as last night's episode of Salt N Pepa, well, I am starting to wonder what Spinderalla's purpose really is. How she compared herself to Jam Master Jay was very off base. How can you compare those two extremely different levels of contribution? Should Spin return for another episode, I guess we'll see how that all plays out." [LDJ]

BlogBeat: Feelin' the Old School
"Indeed, music does wash away from the soul the dust of life. I am so grateful that there are people out there that are so passionate about music and want to share their love with others...for free! I've been a fan of EJ Flavors for a while now. His mixes have introduced me to a lot of artists I had never heard of. He takes it back with Old School Wednesdays - and then he has one of my favorite categories, New Jack Swing. Talk about taking it back! I was grooving this morning to "Teddy's Jam", a little Al B. Surrrre. You know, feel good music. I don't know about you, but I'm not interested in hearing anything about "Superman Dat Hoe" at 7am....or really any other time for that matter." BlogBeat: On Black Music...
"It's also necessary to stress that rock music evolved from black music; some would argue that rock music is simply music that has been "stolen"/ appropriated from blacks. No wonder the music often appeals to us; hell it came from us! At the same time, today, the culture associated with rock music is overwhelmingly white; I think that bands like "The Rolling Stones", "INXS", and "The Strokes", are "fiercely white" and male-oriented too, in terms of their image, and their following, and for that reason I think it's difficult for black folks who have a strong black identity to be fans of these bands - even if the music sounds good..."
