Is This The 'Right Way' For Sam Salter? Umm...Not So Much

sam_salter.jpgThe late '90s saw a rash of R&B male singers that received airplay on the tube and radio, but were seldom heard from since. Singers such as Rell, Case, Tony Rich and Sam Salter all fall within this category. Luckily for Sam, his luck has not run out just yet, and has a new song that will I'm sure he hopes will catch our attention. Those of you familiar with Sam Salter from his Midnight Love slow jams "Once My Shhh, Always My Shhh" or "There You Are" will appreciate this somewhat tired, formulaic song that sounds very much like...what else? Late '90s R&B. This being said, it won't make it into my Bedroom Breakdown playlist. But for all of you jonesing for a sound that doesn't have the same overused electronic talk box (à la Zapp) over an R&B track, this will likely make it onto your newest slow grind mixtape.

Jon B. Reinvents Himself With 'It's U'

jon_b_piano.jpgBefore Robin Thicke became the man, there once was a time when Jon B. was the male white chocolate soul singer du jour. Dude was pretty nice with his. I mean, who else do you know could do duets with Babyface and Tupac and make it work in both instances? His music could take you from the dance floor to the bedroom in one album, and I know many a sista who wouldn't have minded him adding a little milk to their coffee. But as is the case with many artists who ride the fame train for as long as they can, he fell off with a jarring thud. After his last two albums barely registered on anyone's radar, it now appears that he's dusting off his mic and trying to get back into the game once again by reinventing his sound.

"It's U" is Mr. B.'s latest offering and it's a far cry from the slow jams that put him on the map or the hip-hop heavy headnodders that made him a staple on urban radio. In the track he borrows from the popular trends of today using a vocoder and going heavy on the synths. Yawn. With its techno sound, perhaps Jon is aiming at crossover appeal, but after hearing this I'm tempted to ask, who stole the soul?

Bounce Back: Dionne Farris

DionneFarris.jpgToday's Bounce Back artist is none other than Dionne Farris.  In case you can't recall, Dionne was briefly a member of the alternative hip hop group Arrested Development, lending her sprawling vocals to the 1992 single, "Tennessee."  Soon after that, the pint-sized powerhouse from Atlanta, Georgia, went out on her own, exploring her rocker side with 1994's Wild Seed, Wild Flower.  The lead single "I Know" peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  And of course, the song she might be most remembered for is 1997's "Hopeless" from the Love Jones motion picture soundtrack.

Well, thankfully, after a long hiatus, Dionne is back with a new release, the appropriately entitled Signs of Life, which is available online here.  She's also under new management, being represented by Matthew Knowles (yup, Solange's daddy) after signing to Free and Clear Records.  Her new single, "For U", is a multi-layered, soulful slow jam that fits her voice perfectly.  Check it out below and give us some feedback on today's Bounce Back.

Bounce Back: Soul For Real

soul_for_real_grown.JPG

This week's Bounce Back artists are the Brothers Dalyrimple, a.k.a. Soul for Real. After ten years (wow, has it been that long? Yikes!) of laying in the cut, the Aljoba Music Group recording artists are back on the scene with brand new music. Seems like just yesterday they were droppin' some "Candy Rain" on fools. Times done changed.

The first single from their forthcoming CD is "One Man", featuring Jadakiss.  The track samples liberally from the Lenny Williams classic "'Cause I Love You" and shows the group in full throat.

The oldest sibling, Chris (his nickname is "Choc", but we here at SoulBounce refuse to refer to grown men as such) wasn't around for the press tour (which meant they were "One Man" down), but the fellas insist he's still with the group. Good for him. Personally, I'm still trippin' from seeing lil' Jason all grown up. Where for art thou falsetto, bro?

Check the single below and leave some feedback on the Bounce Back.
