Loose Ends: Where Are They Now?

loose ends.jpgThe things we do for our readers.

Recently, a SoulBounce visitor emailed us to inquire if we could track down some of our favorite old school soul artists to bring their fans up-to-date. Many artists were mentioned, but it was Loose Ends who piqued our interest since the last time we really heard from them was in 1990 when their last hit "Don't Be A Fool" was getting radio airplay love. Keep in mind that last incarnation of Loose Ends was not the original lineup of Carl McIntosh, Jane Eugene, and Steve (the cute one) Nichol, but Carl, Linda Carriere, and Sunay Suleyman. Word had it that Carl and Jane were living in Los Angeles, while Steve's whereabouts were unknown. Always up for a challenge, I decided to fulfill the thirst of at least one of our readers and track down Carl, the only member with a MySpace page, to find out what was up with one of the best UK soul imports of the '80s. I received the following email in my inbox yesterday. It was, how shall I say, interesting.

Erykah's Vortex Tour Poster Is Here

vortex_tour_poster.jpg
After seeing the beautiful work of artist E.M.E.K. on Erykah Badu's previous tour posters for her international dates, comes the US tour poster for her current US tour with The Roots. A bit of discolsure: I am an unapologetic Erykah stan, and I have another 34 days until she descends upon Los Angeles. I absolutely cannot wait! Those who have not peeped the list of concert dates, we've got you covered right here. To view all of E.M.E.K.'s Erykah works (for all you stans), it's right here

'Black Lily' To Bloom In Philadelphia May 1-4

black_lily_logo.jpgNext week this time I will be in the City of Brotherly Love in the midst of an empowering and groundbreaking event for women. That's right, folks, it's time for the second annual Black Lily Film & Music Festival, returning to Philadelphia from May 1-4 for four days of film and music focused on the contributions of women to both art forms. Last year's inaugural festival drew over 2000 attendees who enjoyed a full weekend of screenings, discussions and concert performances from talent such as Jill Scott, Ursula Rucker, Amanda Diva and Amy Winehouse.

This year's festival boasts more screenings, workshops and panels and even includes a track for girls to expose them to DJing, music production, digital film editing and costume design. Black Lily will also honor eight women for their contributions to music and film during the festival. Honorees are femcee Bahamadia, Sweet Honey in the Rock founding member Bernice Johnson Reagon, classical music conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson, Hip-Hop Association president Martha Diaz, singer Meshell Ndegeocello and filmmakers Pearl Bowser, Stephanie Black and Tia Lessin. Artists scheduled to perform next week include Jaguar Wright, Lizz Wright, Ladybug Mecca, Imani Uzuri, Maya Azucena and a who's who of female DJs and underground soul and hip-hop acts. Tickets are still available for what is sure to be another history-making event. Be there or be mad that you missed it. See ya there!

Kanye West Tour Was Glowing...Or Not

kanye-tour-poster.jpg
Kanye West's "Glow In The Dark Tour which kicked off in Seattle this past Wednesday was either a bright spot in your week or not depending on who you ask. According to Rolling Stone, Kanye's 90-minute set was "stellar," while the Seattle Times has wriiten that Kanye took the concert experience to a "new planet." A concertgoer who was present at the first stop on the "Glow In The Dark Tour" had other thoughts, however. The concert was described to me as "just okay" and "wished Kanye could have hyped the crowd up more." Furthermore, it was stated that the only thing that really glowed in the dark were "the bottoms of his sneakers, technically speaking." Ouch. But the gold-colored dancers present for his song "Gold Digger" were given high marks. The other headliners (Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, and N*E*R*D*) were all given pretty high ranks as well, and the set design held true to its futuristic look, since 'Ye was supposedly trapped onboard a rogue spaceship that was taking him to alien worlds. Not the biggest Kanye fan myself, but it certainly sounds interesting and worth a look if nothing else.

'Paid Dues' Will Travel

PaidDues.jpgFor everyone looking for an independent hip-hop fix this spring (and really, aren't we all?!?!?), the founders of the successful Paid Dues Festival have great news. They just might be coming to a city near you.

The festival, put together years ago by indy artists Murs 3:16 and Guerilla Union, has been rocking stages across California for years. Now they're taking their acts on the road, with stops in New York, Fort Lauderdale and Denver before bringing back home to Berkeley.

But wait, there's more!

Just added to the remaining schedule are hip-hop legend Rakim (New York, Ft. Lauderdale), De La Soul (Denver, Berkeley), GZA (New York), Buckshot (New York), Little Brother (Berkeley) and Kidz in the Hall (all dates).  The deejay? None other than  9th Wonder! So, if you're close, get up on it. If you're not, cross your fingers and hope for "Paid" to land in your city during the summer. Check the dates after the bounce.

Big Boi + Ballet? But, Of Course

big.jpgI don't know about you, but nothing the dudes from Outkast do surprises me. At all. I mean, their music has always crossed boundaries and forced people to take notice. They'll forever be progressive trend setters. You did see Idlewild, right?

So when Big Boi, aka Antwan Patton, made the announcement last fall that he'd be using his music as part of a ballet, I didn't even do a double-take. In fact, I found myself laughing and saying it was about time.

Well, the ballet "big" debuted last night in Atlanta as part of a collaborative effort with choreographer Laura Stallings and will run at the Fox Theatre throughout the weekend. According to atlantaballet.com, the groundbreaking event "fuses the visual experience of Atlanta's ballet company with with hip-hop music."  Perfect. The show also features the usual Big Boi suspects, including Sleepy Brown, Janelle Monáe, Joi Gilliam, Scar, Big Rube, Rock D, and members of the musical group Konkrete.

If you're in the Atlanta area, we strongly suggest you check this out ... and then tell us all about it. Personally, I can't wait to see it live and in person myself.

New Erykah Badu Tour Poster & More Tour Dates

Erykah Badu and EMEK have not failed to represent when it comes to the collaboration on her tour poster designs. Thus far, the tour posters for her Israel and Nigeria tour dates have been visually dope and left us feenin' for more. The poster (clickable) for her April 19th stop in Moscow, Russia is displayed at left, and it is fiyah! We're loving the rework of the old communist posters, and with Erykah's massive afro and fists pumping towards her in unison, it just takes the theme of power to the people to a whole other level.

By now, many of you have been scouring the internet to find out if Erykah will be blessing your hometown with some of her musical love. The previous trickle of released tour dates was posted here on SoulBounce, but the complete list was still as elusive as what Erykah has up under that 'fro of hers. But never fear: the complete list of tour dates, in case you haven't gotten hip to them yet, is after the bounce.

What's Really Going On, Druscilla?

The IPS is on permanent sitdown for bringing this to our attention!

dru-1060ld2.jpg

After Woody's poorly-timed bombshell that he was leaving Dru Hill (classic material) to follow God (to where, I have no idea), it looks like he's being permanently replaced. No, not by Scola, but by some cats auditioning this very evening in Baltimore to be in the group. We're usually a classy bunch over here at SB. Sometimes not so much. However, there are certain details about this mess that fuels my side-eye with the wrath of a thousand formerly-interesting boy bands.

  • Why not just be DH-3?
  • Who wants to be in this group after all that we've witnessed? That's like signing with Bad Boy.
  • These phrases make me nervous: Baltimore's "Top" Male Vocalist; Private Sexy After-Party; Belvedere Hotel.
Yeah, okay. Talent search...

Diddy To Bring Bitchassness To Winter Music Conference

Try as hard as I might to ignore Diddy and his antics, he makes it increasingly difficult. After Diddy overload on SoulBounce last week, I made it a point to avoid all things Making the Band 4 over the weekend, but he just keeps pulling me back. He recently posted a new video to Diddy TV where he makes a big announcement that after a two-year self-imposed break he will be making his big return to the Winter Music Conference in Miami this week. Whoopty-do.

Although none of your friendly SoulBounce editors will be making the trek down to MIA for the WMC, we'll be there in spirit and for those who want to really get down with the get down be sure to support events where our extended SB fam, DJ Stylus, Stephanie Renee and a host of others, will be spinning or performing.

Erykah Badu's 'Vortex Tour' Dates Now Officially Released

erykah_hat_tilt.jpg Membership does indeed have its privileges. And for those who are members of Erykah Badu's Fancorps, you may have found a nice surprise in your inbox. After piecing together dates from an unreleased tour schedule last week, came a message from Erykah that, "New tour dates added so check to see if I will be rolling through your town." Uh...okay. Thanks, E, but we knew that already. Checking Ticketmaster for her tour with opening act The Roots did reveal a bit more dates, but not all cities where she'll be performing are on the website. Your best bet in that case is to do a web search for independent ticket dealers to get in on a piece of the action. Y'all know I already got my tickets! 79 days and counting!

Tour dates after the jump.
