9th Wonder & Murs Know The Key To Our Hearts Is Labeled 'Free'

9thwonder-murs_sweet_lord_cover.jpgWhat's better than a pay-your-own-price album download? You guessed it: one that's free! Granted, many of us have liberated music files on our computer's hard drives right now. And more and more artists know the truth about making money in the music business is not in the product you created in the studio, it's the money you will hopefully make connecting with fans on tour. LA-based Murs and the prolific 9th Wonder have released Sweet Lord, now available for free download with some financial help from sportswear company Hurley. After listening to the whole album, it's not mind-blowing, but it is better than the minstrel show of bright colors, grills, and posing that passes for hip hop these days.

Bounce-Worthy: Nola Darling

nola_darling.jpg These days mixtapes from new artists trying to get their name and music out there are a dime a dozen, but it's the rare artist that really stands out from the pack and delivers a hot product. Singing femcee duo Nola Darling fall into that latter category, thankfully. I got wind of these two with the recent release of their Nola Darling's Pretty Gritty Mini-Mixtape, and I was immediately intrigued by their name. I mean who wouldn't be drawn in by a couple of young ladies with the gumption to name themselves after one of the most iconic characters in the history Black cinema, Spike Lee's sexually liberated "she" from his feature film debut She's Gotta Have It? After I dug a little deeper, I found that Nola's Nikkobya Bisou and Aziza Montnegro are more than just two cute girls with microphones. These New York University grads are actresses, filmmakers and bonafide Renaissance women who can sing over classic hip-hop beats or rap over tracks with an island flair. Members of the AOK Collective, these sisters hold it down without resorting to selling sex or themselves like many of their contemporaries. They should get props for that alone.

Nola Darling's Pretty Gritty Mini-Mixtape is available for download at Rappers I Know. After hearing what Nola Darling has to offer you may just be left begging for more like Mars Blackmon.

Bounce-Worthy: Ayah

ayah_problem_woman_mixtape.jpgAre you looking for a place to find some soul music that combines dope beats, tight vocals and meaningful lyrics? Then look no further than our neighbors to the North because Canada is home to some hot and hungry talent looking to change the game. One such artist that has had me nodding my head to her music for a minute is Toronto songstress, Ayah. In the unfortunate event that you aren't hip to her brand of Hip Hop Soul, then get your hands on her mixtape, Problem Woman, for a proper introduction. Problem Woman has been in heavy rotation on my iTunes since it surfaced online on June 1st. Just like her mixtape cover that shows the two faces of Ayah, her music is sweet but street. The Marvin Gaye-inspired mixtape combines 22-year-old Ayah's honey-thick voice over classic hip-hop tracks, such as Pharcyde's "Passing Me By" and Tribe's "Find A Way." Later on Problem Woman she gives us a taste of what's to come on her upcoming debut CD with a few snippets and full-length tracks of original material that prove that she ain't no joke.

Problem Woman is available for free download on Ayah's website. For those who'd like to hold a piece of Ayah in their hands, autographed copies of the disc are for sale on her MySpace page. Now enjoy these cuts that I've been bumping to the most.

Go 'Green' For A Good Cause

green_album_front.jpgThere are several mixtapes floating around on the interwebs for download. Many of the ones that we come across on SoulBounce are for free, and we couldn't be happier about that. When we were informed about a mixtape that featured Al Green's vintage vocals and musical arrangements over classic hip hop beats from faves such as De La SoulCommon and Mos Def, we couldn't be happier. The happiness increased even more after the mixtape's creator Omer Saar told us that it was created with the intention of bringing awareness to a Philadelphia non-profit organization, Stay True, founded by his brother Nir Saar. Stay True prides itself on education, environmental awareness, and fostering change in our communities. So, Al Green + Hip Hop Beats = Positive Change. We are so there. If you like what you hear, be sure to make a donation to Stay True.

Want To Hear 'The Odd Couple' In Reverse? Why Not.

gnarls_dress.jpg
Gnarls Barkley has released their latest release The Odd Couple in its backwards form, appropriately titled elpuoC ddO ehT, in its entirety for free. Why? We're not quite sure either, but Danger Mouse has a track record of releasing his projects in reverse before. His Grey Album, an unlikely mash-up of The Beatles' The White Album and Jay-Z's The Black Album, featured "Lucifer 9," which revealed lyrics that purportedly sound as if Jay-Z is saying "Murder Jesus 666." Upon first listen to elpuoC ddO ehT it's actually quite listenable, and there's thankfully no hidden Satanic messages coming from the Gnarls Barkley duo. You can download your copy here.

'Fly Away' With Sy Smith And Kay Of The Foundation

sy_smith.jpg

Indie-soul songstress Sy Smith has returned with a new CD that is hot like fire. If you know like I know, then you'll add her latest disc Conflict to your collection with the quickness (alongside her previous releases The Syberspace Social and Psykosoul, which you should already own). I have been bumpin' this joint at SBHQ since seeing her perform live a few weeks ago and one of my favorite tracks from the set is "Fly Away With Me," which finds Sy urging her sweetie to get away with her above the clouds. Big up to FWMJ of Rappers I Know for the free download of this remix featuring SoulBounce fave Kay of The Foundation. His bars at the beginning fit perfectly with the breezy vibe of the song. Love it!

Tanya Morgan And DJ Soul Are In The Mix

tanya_morgan_dj_soul_cover.jpg

Our bad for taking so long to write about the new mixtape from Tanya Morgan and DJ Soul, but we've been too busy jammin' to it here at SBHQ. Tanya Morgan is a Rap Group features Donwill, Ilyas and Von Pea and a rack of guest rappers and producers, including Kay of the Foundation, Naledge from Kidz in the Hall, Median, 88 Keys and Khrysis to name a few. After blessing us with the brilliant DJ Soul and Okayplayer present Assorted Donuts J Dilla mixtape last year, DJ Soul has banged out another must-have.

Download the mixtape here and enjoy one of my TM faves below. Tracklist after the bounce.

'Are You' Ready For HEAVy?

heavy.jpg

The NYC duo HEAVy is in a rather benevolent mood. Casey Benjamin and Nicky Guiland are offering up a new song and remix for free. Both versions of the song "Are You" are currently available for dload from HEAVy's MySpace page and also on zShare. I'm feeling both tracks, but I'm partial to the sound of the remix and I prefer the rap from the original. Either way, both of these gems will fit nicely into rotation this Spring.

And good news for any heads attending SXSW in Austin, Texas this week. HEAVy will be performing tonight at the kickoff event for SXSW Soul. Nicky and Casey will be getting busy one time at Molotov on the same bill as Choklate, Jennifer Johns, and additional performers.

Rhymefest Sticks a Reece's Cup on His Nose and Gives Us the Most Worthwhile Track from 'Man in the Mirror'

mj_scarecrow.jpg

Perhaps the title of this posting is a bit misleading; I possess a known predisposition towards Rhymefest's Man In the Mirror mixtape, for my side-eye burns with the fire of a thousand former Neverland Ranch employees. But, there are several worthy tracks on the tape. It's just that when I began this post, "Can't Make It" was on repeat. Parse my Last.fm stats if they go back that far, and while you're there add me as a friend.

Best Kept Secret's aggressive percussion appeals to a listener like me, someone that counts Just Blaze and Rich Harrison as top producers that can guarantee a banger 99.2% of the time, even when they aren't trying. Favorite line: "All these rappers (can't make it) / that ringtone shit is a wrap, you (can't make it) / I'm bringing real Hip-Hop back, you (can't make it)." Not really sure what constitutes "real" Hip-Hop nowadays, but, daps on the ringtone comment. I suppose real Hip-Hop is the opposite of ringtone rap?

The most disturbing conceit suggested on Man In the Mirror: That Rhymefest and Michael Jackson would hang out and talk about groupies. Yeah. Okay. Download the whole thing here.

So What Was Von Pea Thinking with 'American Angster'?

American Angster Cover.jpgWe haven't talked anything Hova-related here in a while, mainly because I placed an embargo on all American Gangster coverage in order to re-focus on our soul vocalists. But when we received Von Pea's American Angster remix album in our inbox, I just couldn't resist.

The American Gangster Acapellas dropped December 4th, Jay-Z's born-day, and DJs went nuts. Kevin Nottingham has been archiving all of the different versions and cites Von Pea's as one of the best. We recently highlighted Pea's group Tanya Morgan in our video roundup and Your SoulBounce Founder is a fan of the Grand Vonye tape. Simply put, to receive American Angster via Pea's personal delivery was kinda boss.

Now let's get down to the nitty.
