Sérgio Mendes + Ledisi x DJ Spinna = Soulful House Heaven

sergio_mendes_ledisi_dj_spinna.JPGWith the temperatures heating up outside, it's not as if we need anything else to make us sweat. But Sérgio Mendes and Ledisi clearly want our antiperspirants to work overtime with this DJ Spinna remix of their song "Waters of March." Brazilian superstar Mendes enlisted soul sanger Ledisi for the remake of the Antonio Carlos Jobim classic on his newly released album, Encanto. Led's album version is cool, but in Spinna's clutches, this song is taken to a funky higher level with more percussion, keys and synthesizers. It's great to hear Ledisi on another soulful house track after she lent her vocals to Miguel Migs and Petalpusher's "Breakin' It Down" a few years back. Just like that song, this is another tune perfect for dancing the long summer days away.

DJ Aryes Blesses James Brown With a Little B-More Sweat

Not to be outdone by Kenny Dope, DJ Aryes flexes on this remix of "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose." It comes from a four-EP collection of James Brown remixes called Doin' James. But this right here is strictly for the deejays; it's all on vinyl, baby. There's something about James' classic, celebratory funk that totally lends itself to Baltimore House, a genre of music that, for the most part, requires a certain level of intoxication and zero inhibitions. The first part of the collection can be found here. More here. Thanks to The FADER for doing all the work for us. Totes appreciated!

Tortured Soul Shares Their 'Dream'

tortured_soul_closeup.jpgOne of our favorite house acts, Tortured Soul, is back in the game. As further proof of this, they've been touring, and their In Transit EP was released last month. One of the tracks from the four song EP, "Your Dream Is My Dream" has been remixed by house DJ John Cutler and the result will definitely get you into the mood for dancing, prancing, and lovely summertime tropical drinks. Enjoy!

Come Into Glenn Lewis' House

glenn_lewis.jpg

Guess who's back, y'all? That silky-voiced Canadian/West Indian chocolate drop Glenn Lewis has returned to the scene with a new soulful house song. YES! Stevie Wonder comparisons aside (and Lewis straight channels him once again), "Stay With Me" showcases Glenn at his best. Dude is sounding pretty damn incredible here.

The track is produced and co-written by the Legendary Terry Hunter and is released on his T's Box label. It also features some work from DJ Jazzy Jeff on the keys, but it's Glenn's vocals that really shine. The original version of the song is good, but the Muzikman Edition Remix is pure dance floor hotness. Now if you'll excuse me, I can't type and soul clap at the same time.

Seiji Sweetens Erykah's 'Honey' Just a Taste

badu-peter-yang.jpg

So basically an alarm goes off whenever something Erykah Badu-related hits the interwebs, if that wasn't obvious. This is one of the remixes of "Honey" produced by Seiji of Bugz in the Attic, utilizing the broken beat style he's become known for. The Funk doesn't get lost in the drums and added effects, and although the vocals have been slowed down to accommodate the new instrumentation, Badu sounds as clear as ever. I'm thinking I need to get my behind to the UK as soon as monetarily possible. [H/T: Diplo; Photo: Peter Yang]

Trizonna McClendon: 'Sunshine and Lemonade (Make Me Feel Mix)'

trizonna-alzo-slade.jpg

When we first heard Trizonna McClendon's "Sunshine and Lemonade" we knew it was itching for a House version. The "Make Me Feel" mix is produced by Darren "DJ QUAD" Brandon & Joe "MO-JOE" Glover of InBlueBlackness, who've also remixed Natalie Cole and Brandy. Color us late for missing this one, but hearing it now makes us a bit more optimistic that Summer is just around the corner.

When Roy Davis Jr. and Peven Everett Took House To Church With 'Gabriel'

roy_davis_grace_peven_everett.JPG

Since SoulBounce is housing it up this week, I'd be remiss if I didn't dig into the crates and pull out another of my favorite house cuts of all time, "Gabriel" by DJ Roy Davis Jr. featuring Peven Everett on vocals.

"Gabriel" dropped in 1998, and it was my introduction to both Davis and Everett. The music is sick, but it's the lyrics that really drew me in. The song is about the Archangel Gabriel, you see, and it's practically a hymn if you listen closely.

I first heard the track thanks to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater when it was used in a production entitled Grace, created in 1999 for the company by choreographer Ronald K. Brown of Evidence Dance Company. Those who've seen Grace performed by Ailey or Evidence know how dope this piece is, and the thumping groove of "Gabriel" took it to another level.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to let Roy and Peven take me to church.

House Podcasts You Need to Be Rocking To

In the absence of the official Mixtape Roundup (I swear it's coming back, ya'll) and in celebration of our light House Music Week that sort of coincides with The Winter Music Conference, I've decided to put together a list of Soulful House podcasts that you need to be subscribing to at this very moment. These podcasts are chiefly how I keep up with House music, since the genre itself is so dense and is associated with so few broadly recognizable names. I now extend the wealth to you, the SoulBounce Reader.

If I'm missing anyone, drop a comment and I'll add it to the list post-haste.

DJ Spinna is a Chameleon

spinna-441916875_l.jpg

The third, and final, House producer I'm celebrating this week is of course DJ Spinna, who's a major force in many Soul circles. It's hard to listen to any artist in my collection that he's not in some way connected to, mainly because of the brother's versatility. Rarely do you find a producer that's able to pull off House, Hip-Hop and everything in between this convincingly. From his remix of De La Soul's classic "Stake Is High" to his work with soulful House acts like Tortured Soul and Ananda Project, Spinna is not to be effed with. His genre-crossing Intergalactic Soul (2006) showcased his musical range and featured SoulBounce faves Eric Roberson, N'Dea Davenport and Phonte of Little Brother.

I'm done paraphrasing his resumé. Get into the tracks.
