Behind The Groove With Noel Gourdin

noel_gourdin_boardwalk.jpgNoel Gourdin may be a new jack on the scene, but he is an old soul when it comes to music. The Brockton, Massachusetts born-and-bred singer has deep roots in the South, and he pays homage to this on his debut single, "The River." King of Comedy turned syndicated morning show host, Steve Harvey, took a strong liking to the song and that's when the fun started for Gourdin.

Christened as "Steve Harvey's Big Find" mere months ago, "The River" received national airplay, was featured in the film Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins and finally became a hit after first debuting some time in 2007. Far from an overnight success, Noel has been trying to make his mark for a while now and with his debut album After My Time hitting stores next Tuesday, his time is now.

I recently had an opportunity to chat with Noel about his newfound success, the goodness he has in store for us on his CD, and his plans for a long future in the recording industry. With a clever mix of soul and R&B on his new disc, I expect to hear good music coming from this talented young man for years to come.

Behind The Groove With Calvin Richardson

calvin_richardson_crop.jpg Remember a time when you could turn on the radio and actually hear real singing at any time of day on most stations? Sadly, those days are gone thanks to corporate greed and general public apathy. But thankfully there are still true artists who exist to bring good music back to the forefront by any means necessary. One such artist who is trying to bring singing back is Calvin Richardson. He has returned to the music scene after a five-year break with a new album and a new outlook but with the same soulful sound you remember.

Calvin released his latest album, When Love Comes, this past May and it marked his debut on independent label Shanachie Records after years of bouncing around on the majors. His time away from the music scene served him well because he returned with a solid offering with When Love Comes. His Southern-fried swagger is intact alongside his gospel choir-ready voice on the disc.

In this edition of Behind the Groove, Calvin Richardson discusses leaving the major labels behind, tells me why his album needs to be in everyone's collection, shares his desire to make soul music commercial again and gives advice to aspiring artists (hint: don't give up and give him a holla).

Behind The Groove With Hil St. Soul

hil_st_soul_promo.jpgThe name Hilary Mwelwa may not be familiar to most soul music fans. Unless, that is, they're aware that she is the "Hil" in the duo Hil St. Soul--and arguably the "Soul" as well. Hilary serves as the face and voice of the project that has its roots in England but has captivated fans of urban adult contemporary music stateside and beyond.

As the case may be, Hil St. Soul enjoys more success abroad than they do at home, despite churning out one stellar album after another, including their latest release, Black Rose. The album's title track bemoans the plight of Black artists on the UK soul music scene. Hilary and I talked extensively about the lack of opportunities that are available for soulful artists of color such as herself to get any attention in the UK because the spotlight is focused on their Caucasian counterparts Duffy, Adele and the ubiquitous Amy Winehouse. Mwelwa is not afraid to voice her feelings on the matter and ask for her and her musical sistren to get their share of the spotlight. After talking with Hilary and hearing the new music on Black Rose it is abundantly clear that it is Hil St. Soul's time to shine.

Behind The Groove With Lalah Hathaway

lalah_hathaway_hat.JPG

The name Lalah Hathaway is synonymous with good music. Bursting onto the music scene in 1990 with her self-titled debut album, 18 years later she is still here and stronger than ever. Whether she's singing soul or jazz, originals or covers, live or on wax, Lalah continues to prove that she is one of the best female vocalists to ever pick up a microphone.

Nowhere is this better heard than on her newly-released album, Self Portrait. Showcasing her signature thick-as-honey vocals, this is her most personal work to date. With no remakes or abundance of guest artists, the disc is 100% Lalah and it will surely satisfy her audience and gain her new listeners.

I had the honor of speaking with Lalah recently, and she was such a delight to talk to. We laughed (OK, I did most of the laughing) and touched on a variety of topics including what inspired her to make Self Portrait, the gadgets and the games that she's into, her new home at Stax Records and choosing not to live in her father's shadow but to live in his light. Get a little closer to Lalah.

Behind The Groove With Anthony David

anthony_david_red_guitar.jpg

Anthony David may not be a household name yet, but that's all about to change if India.Arie has anything to say about it. When we got word that India would be getting her own label imprint and releasing Anthony as her first artist, we were quite happy to hear that AD would finally be getting some much-deserved shine. Although he has enjoyed a degree of success on his own and built a large grassroots following, Anthony welcomes the transition to the mainstream and is looking forward to doing big things with the release of his album Acey Deucy on June 17th.

With a sound reminiscent of the classic soul that we don't often hear nowadays, Anthony is a welcome throwback to the days when singers sang and didn't rely on studio tricks and celebrity producers. As a singer/songwriter who takes his craft seriously, David is about to let the masses know that he got next and to get used to hearing his name.

I recently had chance to chop it up with Anthony while he readies the release of his upcoming album, and we enjoyed a spirited conversation about his experiences as an independent artist, his admiration for Alexander O'Neal, his love of blogging and why he wouldn't change his journey for anything.

Behind The Groove With Eric Roberson

eric_roberson_chair.jpg
What better way to celebrate our 1000th post than with an interview with one of SoulBounce's favorite artists, Eric Roberson

After grinding in the music biz for years, Eric Roberson is enjoying his time in the sun with his critically-acclaimed and crowd-pleasing album Left. One year after its release, it is still moving units and finding its way to new listeners thanks to his national exposure on Michael Baisden's syndicated radio show and his TV One series Basiden After Dark. But Erro isn't letting this success go to his head. He remains humble and thankful for all of his many blessings.

Despite his mean-mugging in the above photo, as you'll hear in the interview, Eric has a ripe sense of humor. Check us out as we laugh it up and chat about the success of Left, the new music that he's working on, advice for independent artists, an upcoming collaboration with Ledisi, turning in his player card, and his boys, the New York Giants.

Now excuse me while I pass around the Champipple here at SBHQ to toast the occasion and Eric Roberson.

Behind The Groove With Algebra

algebra_purpose.jpg

What do you get when you take a heartfelt soul singer, then add her songwriting skill, and multiply it all by a stable of talented producers? That winning formula can only result in one answer: Algebra.

Her debut album, Purpose, will be released tomorrow on Kedar Entertainment, the independent label run by Kedar Massenburg, the man who brought us Erykah Badu, D'Angelo and India Arie. After listening to Algebra's music it will be clear why Kedar believes that she got next. Although this is her first release, Algebra is no stranger to soul music fans. She has toured extensively over the past two years and her first single "U Do It For Me" received numerous radio spins and the accompanying video could be seen on VH1 Soul and BETJ in heavy rotation.

I got the opportunity to get behind the groove with Algebra on the eve of her CD release and her excitement was palpable. We had a lively conversation about everything from her name, to neo-soul still being alive and kicking, to the purpose behind Purpose. Algebra knows what hers is and she can't wait to share it with the world.

If anyone is in Atlanta on Tuesday night, then swing by Sugar Hill for Algebra's CD release party. Peep the flyer after the bounce.

Behind The Groove With Nicolay & Kay

nicolay_kay.jpg

What do you get when you combine a producer from Holland with an emcee from Houston? The answer is Nicolay & Kay, one of the hottest hip-hop collaborations this side of DJ Premier and Guru. Nic and Kay understand each other and, more importantly, they understand music with all of its intricacies and nuances. This can clearly be heard on their brand new release, Time:Line.

You know how some albums have to grow on you and take time to make their way into heavy rotation? That's not the case with Time:Line. This is a disc that you'll want to bump from beginning to end then take it from the top again just to make sure you didn't miss anything.

I spoke with Nicolay & Kay yesterday on the official U.S. release date of Time:Line, the inaugural drop on the Nicolay Music imprint. From their Okayplayer days to now, Nicolay & Kay shared with me how their association started, talked in-depth about the album's concept and the hip-hop scenes in their respective hometowns, touched on everyone from Quincy Jones to Soulja Boy, and even gave me a scoop or two on some upcoming projects. (Hint: It involves more brilliant music.)
