Jack Davey's Music Manifesto Put To Video

Not to harp too much on the recent debacle involving the signing of Janelle Monae to Bad Boy Records comes an actual video of the open letter to the music industry penned by Miss Jack Davey, fearless critic of the music industry and frontwoman of J*Davey, as was earlier reported here on SoulBounce. While this manifesto is not being delivered by Miss Davey herself, nor by this dude, it is being delivered by the electronic female voice from A Tribe Called Quest's albums (post-Low End Theory)! Crazy!

It's kinda ill how Davey calls out Diddy, too, by stating that he "killed music in '94." Ouch.

Janelle, please take note.

New Music From Nicolay in February!

Nicolay & Kay - TIMELINE.jpg

We'd be remiss not to mention that the man Nicolay has a new album dropping in February. For Time:Line, the Dutch producer is teaming with Kay (Dem Damb Jacksons) and is bringing Stokely, Oh No, Chip Fu and Myth & S1 from the Strange Fruit Project along for the ride. Full tracklisting and audio sampler after the bounce.

Mary J. Blige Goes Retro On New Album Cover

mjb_growing_pains_cover.jpgAre we the only ones noticing a theme here with Mary J. Blige surrounding her next release? First, she goes back in time on us in her video for "Just Fine" and now the album cover for Growing Pains has surfaced, and we had to look on the calendar to make sure it was 2007 and not 1977. Make no mistake, this is a good look for MJB but now we're really curious about what direction the CD will be going in. Anyone else?

What He Say His Name Is?

niggy_tardust.jpgSaul Williams, MC, beat poet, and star of acclaimed indie movie "Slam," will be releasing a new album entitled The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust. His character Niggy first made his appearance in Williams' book Dead Emcee Scrolls in 2006. Niggy Tardust, like David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust androgynous alien character, is separated from society not because he is far from his alien home, but because he is Black and into all matters of street corner thuggery.

And get this, who's producer on this brilliantly titled album? Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.

Wow.

I have no idea what's in store, but I can already imagine Radiohead-esque haunting melodies mixed with some Mos Def-ness à la The New Danger. Should be interesting to say the least...

The best part? You can download it for FREE via the official Niggy Tardust website beginning 11/1/07.

Van Hunt's New CD Leaks--And He's Cool With That

van_hunt_popular.jpg

Fresh off a show opening for Meshell Ndegeocello, Van Hunt posted out a MySpace blog early this morning where he addressed the recent leak of his upcoming CD, Popular. From the sounds of it, Van isn't fazed by the new disc already hitting the mean internet streets although its release date isn't until January 15, 2008. Well, if Van Hunt doesn't mind, then neither do we.

that kind of violation is beyond my immediate control. let's be real. if you are going to give away promotional copies of your record-several months before it is to be released-then you know you are taking a chance that it will be "leaked." we wanted people to start talking about the record before it came out... well, we succeeded. as the creator of the music, my goal is to have as many people as possible hear the work. i wish there were even more people-all over the internet-screaming about how amazing their bootleg of 'popular' is. i want to be paid for my work. but, praise comes in many forms-verbal, physical and monetary. so, you may be a thief with high cultural tastes who has to download a copy of my record for free or you may be a person of impenetrable integrity who wants to wait and purchase the record next year or you may be too impatient and wealthy and don't mind paying $60 to an auction site for an early peek at the album or you might want to trade your clueless friend your extra copy of the hard to find early n'sync demos for a fresh van hunt download...i just want ya'll to LISTEN to the music. let it get into you; and, tell somebody-somebody who you know will understand-about the way it made you move. spread the word!

So if anyone has a link to Popular and wants to share it with us, we won't be mad. And clearly neither will Van Hunt.

Babyface Does JET Magazine, Oprah, And Lil Wayne?

babyfce_jet.JPG
This week Babyface can be seen on the cover of JET Magazine. Black America's news and entertainment digest chats with Face about life after his divorce and his new CD, Playlist. Keeping with the divorce theme, he'll also be on Oprah today discussing the break-up and how the family dealt with it. Set your DVR's because he'll be performing his new single, "Not Going Anywhere," which is dedicated to his two sons, Brandon and Dylan. OK, you may want to have the Kleenex on standby.

In other Babyface news, a song surfaced online yesterday that has him on the hook and backing vocals, but that's not why we're scratching our heads. The fact that it's a Lil Wayne song is what has us perplexed. Yes, Face has gotten sucked into the Weezy vortex. The song "Complicated" is produced by Kanye West and there's no word on if this is a new track off of Wayne's upcoming CD or what, but we're afraid, very afraid.

Listen to "Complicated" at Real Talk NY.

Chaka Khan - Will You Love Me?

Of course I love Chaka Khan. X's and O's all day.

This is a DVD-rip of the "Will You Love Me" track to appear on Funk This droppin' September 25th. It's all love and all, but I hope an ACTUAL video develops for this track.

Go Team Kanye!

Ye_Graduation_Instore.jpgIt's official, Kanye West has sonned the competition and landed firmly atop the album sales chart with a reported 930K copies of Graduation sold, according to HITS Daily Double. Official SoundScan numbers haven't been reported yet, but does it even matter at this point? 50 Cent lost the battle with his distant second-place showing. Don't be mad, Curtis, we hear UPS is hiring.

In other Ye news, did he burn a bridge at MTV with his post-VMA rant? Perhaps, but maybe we'd be pressed if they actually played videos on the channel with any regularity these days. [NYDN]

Call It A Come Back (And A Come Up)

Former En Vogue diva and Lucy Pearl babe Dawn Robinson and her husband Dre Allen are trying to join the reality television revolution. The once-successful singer and her "ghetto rockstar" husband are currently shopping their independently-produced series The Come Back & Come Up of Dawn & Dre to a few outlets, such as BET and TV One. Until their show gets picked up, you can peep the clip here:

Oh really, Dawn and Dre? Rats, flying roaches and gas station hustling, oh my! Looks like the diva ain't very funky nowadays. They may not be Bobby and Whitney (thank God!), but this reality show may actually prove to be interesting while we watch the talented duo try to make a dollar out of fifteen cents. We'll be tuning in.

Rahsaan Patterson Returns

Is it just us, or is it shaping up to be a quite a soulful September to anyone else? With new releases from Angie Stone, Queen Latifah, Chaka Khan, and Jill Scott on our radar, we almost missed another disc that is set to drop in the next few weeks by none other than Rahsaan Patterson.

The neo-soulman is returning to the scene with the new CD Wines & Spirits, his first release since 2004's After Hours. The album will be released on Rahsaan's label Artistry Music, and he is currently offering up a free download of the song "Higher Love" to whet listener's appetites. After this tasty sample, we are definitely hungry for more.

Just in case you need a fix to tide you over till then, check out this fly concert video of Rahsaan live on stage singing about a dozen of his past hits.
