Name That Beat: Dear Summer

grandmaster_dee_hands.jpgGreetings, all! Welcome back to Name That Beat. Last week's beat is a rediscovered gem that 9th Wonder helped to gain more attention by using it for the beat he created for Erykah Badu's "Honey." The original beat was Nancy Wilson's "In Love With You." Good looks to Tia for answering this correctly.

This week's Name That Beat is little bittersweet. First the good news: this is the 31st installment of Name That Beat. Thanks for your continued interest. Now the (sort of) bad news: Name That Beat is going on hiatus. Think of it as the beats going on vacation for their summer break. They need some time to float around in the world, meeting and mesmerizing new people. But don't worry, just like summer vacation did not last forever (no matter how much you wished it would), the beats will return real soon. In the meantime, enjoy some beats below.

Name That Beat: Where Hip Hop Lives

djheather.jpgHappy Tuesday, y'all! Welcome back to your beloved Name That Beat. Big up to Belve who correctly guessed last week's beat. It was Donald Byrd's "Beale Street" that was used by Pharcyde on "Oh Sh*t!" I know that usually the East is in the house when it comes to the hip hop artists mentioned, but the West often comes with the realness, too.

This week's beat is below. Be sure to include:

  • The artist(s) and title of the beat
  • The artist(s) and title of the song that sampled it
You can always leave whatever you want in the comments, but unless you include the above, your answer won't be correct, and you won't be able to see your name in bold type next week? And who doesn't want that?

Good luck!

Name That Beat: Forever Old Skool

Last week's beat was a bit of a tricky one. Mainly because the sample was easy enough, but coming up with the artist who sampled it was a bit more challenging. Yes, this track is Atlantic Starr's "Love Me Down." The song that sampled it is also titled "Love Me Down" by DJ Cozmos. I know it's a bit of an underground track, but I figured you crate digging DJs would have been up on it. Oh well.

DJ Cozmos: "Love Me Down"

Anywayz, this week's beat is below. Be sure to include the following for your answer to be correct:

  • The artist(s) and title of the beat
  • The artist(s) and title of the song that sampled it

Name That Beat: Gifted And Going Far

IMG_0034.JPGYou know what time it is by now, right? It's Name That Beat time, y'all. Let's get things popping like hot butter on popcorn. Before we do, let's announce last week's winner. Jay correctly guessed Wes Montgomery's "Angela" used by DJ Premier for Show Biz and A.G.'s "Next Level (Remix)." As usual, Primo chopped up the beat like a Philly cheesesteak, and the result was pure goodness.

This week's beat is below. To be correct and win, your answer must include the following:

  • The artist(s) and title of the beat
  • The artist(s) and title of the song that sampled it

Name That Beat: Volume 25

dj_moni.jpgWelcome back to the 25th installment of Name That Beat! Last week's beat was a doozy, I will admit. Nevertheless, shabazz showed and proved that he had the goods and provided the correct answer. Charles Mingus' "Mingus Fingus No. 2" provided the beat for Organized Konfusion's "Stress." Good job, shabazz. That horn sample on "Stress" was tucked away on an already horn-laden track by Mingus.

This week's beat is below. To be correct, you must provide the following:

  • The artist(s) and title of the beat
  • The artist(s) and title of the song that sampled it

Good luck!

Name That Beat: Give It All You Got

Welcome back to Name That Beat! Last week's winner, along with some hint-dropping from DJ Stylus, was Sam Champ who gave the correct answer of "Cause I Need It" by one of the few jazz harpists in the history of the genre, Dorothy Ashby. This harp-heavy track was used for quite a few tracks including Que-D's "Rockbox," and a snippet of this track was also used on "A Million And One Questions" by Jay-Z.  The best use of this track, in my opinion, was used by InI on their seminal classic "Fakin' Jax."

This week's beat is below. To be correct, your answer must include the following:
  • The artist(s) and title of the beat
  • The artist(s) and title of the song that sampled it

Name That Beat: So Unique

red_alert.jpg
Welcome back to Name That Beat, y'all! Last week's beat was courtesy of Bob James whose "Sponge" was used on Nas' track "Watch Dem Nigg*z" from his album It Was Written. The correct answer was submitted once again by Soul Star. Many big ups to you, SS.

This week's beat is below. To be correct, your answer must include:

  • The title and artist(s) name of the sample below
  • The title and artist(s) of the track which used it

By the way, There is more than one answer. Good luck!

Name That Beat: Got It Good

Hey gang! Welcome back to Name That Beat where beat nerds can unite with pride! Last week's sample was Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon." To anyone who has ever heard this track in its entirety will know that many hip hop artists have used this song to create a beat. The portion of the song that was provided, however, was straight jacked, beautifully I might add, by Organized Konfusion for their song "Open Your Eyes." Congrats to DJ Stylus for providing the correct answer in its entirety.

This week's beat is below. To be correct, your answer must include:

  • The title and artist of the original track below
  • The artist and title of the track that sampled it

Good luck!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to one of your favorite escapes from workweek grudgery: Name That Beat. Last week's beat was solved and summed up quite nicely and quickly by Roddycat. The correct answer was Bob James' "Blue Lick" which was sampled by Digable Planets on their song "Jettin'" from their second album, Blowout Comb. Good job! We'll be sending you your lifetime supply of free air as soon as we get the chance! :-)

This week's sample is below. To be correct, you must provide the following in your answer:

  • The title and artist of the original track below.
  • The artist and title of the track who sampled it.

Name That Beat: Fresh To Death

dj_asha.jpg Hello again, everybody! Welcome back to Name That Beat where hindsight really is 20/20, especially after someone guesses the correct beat and the artist(s) who sampled it. Last week had many winners, mainly because the beat of David Axelrod's "A Divine Image" was sampled by more than one artist. Cypress Hill and Kool G Rap & DJ Polo both used this beat for their songs "16 Men Till There's No Men Left" and "Take 'Em To War," respectively, but The Artifacts, Black Moon, and Lord Finesse have all used this beat as well. Congrats to Action Jackson, Belve, DJ Soundwave, and DJ Stylus for such keen auditory observations.

This week's beat is below. To be correct and win your seven days' worth of bragging rights, your answer must include the following:

    • The title and artist of the original track below.
    • The artist and title of the track who sampled it
    Good luck!

Name That Beat: Doesn't Soulja Boy Have Like The Freshest Beats?

dj_kitty_turntables.jpgHappy April Fool's and welcome back to Name That Beat, y'all! As the title of this post shows, we like to have lots of fun over at SoulBounce HQ, but when it comes to the beats, we like to keep it real. Last week, SoulStar kept it really real for the second week in a row by guessing the sample track of "Don't Misunderstand" by Ahmad Jamal sampled by DJ Premier for Jeru the Damaja's "One Day." Major props to you SoulStar, as that was a particularly hard sample to catch. This week's sample is below. To be correct and win a lifetime supply of free air, your answer must include the following:

    • The title and artist of the original track below.
    • The artist and title of the track who sampled it
    Good luck!

Name That Beat: Please Pass The Beats

dj_rekha.jpg Welcome back to Name That Beat! Last week's sample of "Rhapsody In Blue" by Deodato which was sampled by Black Sheep on their "Gimmie The Finga" was correctly guessed by newcomer SoulStar. Good job! I'm loving how y'all have been dropping hints and helping each other out in the comments. Nice to see the music love being spread around.

This week's beat is below. Neophytes to NTB, this is for you: Your answer must include the title and artist of the original track below and the artist and title of the track who sampled it.

All others, you know what to do.

    Good luck!
