'Black Dynamite' Depicts SoulBounce Header Graphic in Shocking Live-Motion!

You know what kind of movies we love here at SoulBounce? The ones where the hero throws a punch but you don't hear it land until ten seconds later. We hope this is the case with Black Dynamite, a spoof of the Blaxploitation genre film starring Michael Jai White, who also co-wrote. If you're anything like us, you're probably pulling up the rear on the late bus, since the film's trailer has been online for a little while now. But don't feel bad, it will probably head straight to DVD after it does Sundance later this month. Here's the synopsis followed by the trailer, after the bounce:

When "The Man" murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

3 Albums in One Year? Prince Might Be the One to Pull It Off

As you've no doubt heard already, our favorite former freak turned strident JW, The Artist Formally Known As Sane Prince is threatening promising to release three full albums in 2009. There's even a fresh new website heralding this phenomenon. After 2008 came and went with only one entry into Badu's New Amerykah trilogy and a couple of years went by without any of the magnum opus promised to us by Maxwell, it's not a little difficult crafting this blog entry without a healthy dose of side-eye juice. However, unlike Badu and Maxwell, Prince isn't beholden to a major label, so he can pretty much flood the market with his purple prowess and at least break even on the strength of his name. However, it remains to be seen if anyone outside of his die-hard core will bite, even with the proposed appearance of Q-Tip. [BB]

Celebrating the Spirit of Black Santa

black_santa_sp.jpgSince it's the holidays, our editors will be in and out for the next several days. Mostly out. See, we need to catch up on listening to the Temptations' rendition of "Silent Night", since we've only heard it about 5,000 times instead of the requisite 10,000. We meant to say something on Monday, but we were so caught up in the egg nog rapture of the holiday spirit that we totally overlooked it. Our bad. At any rate, we're chillin' and enjoying this well-deserved vacation and so should you. And at the risk of getting emo, thanks to everyone that visits everyday and keeps us on our toes, your voices are highly valued in this discourse. Have a safe, blessed and soulful holiday!

Nicolay Classified As 'Marginal', Removed from Wikipedia

Thumbnail image for nicolay-here.jpgYou can find virtually anything on Wikipedia, in varying degrees of accuracy. Nicolay's page was 100% accurate since it was updated and managed by his team. That was until after the release of Leave It All Behind, when it was suddenly wiped from the Internets. Any searches for "Nicolay" will refer you to a disambiguation page, which does not include any references to the Dutch producer. Virtually out of nowhere, he has been classified as a "marginal artist", according to him and his camp--a term that should be considered insulting once we take into account Nic's tenure and who hasn't been removed based on the term's broad definition.

Which Of These Tracks Passes the SoulBounce Sniff Test?

Today's selections are a little more varied than usual, beginning with Gnarls Barkley's hauntingly funky "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" with a guest turn from Jay Electronica as "Jota Flowers." Next we have some more random, misguided noise from Busta Rhymes called "Freakin' You" with Ne-Yo and Missy on the assist. This is dumb. Then, a rare The Brand New Heavies joint featuring 3rd Bass called "My Props (Gimme Mine)," which is from 1992 and heavily tagged. And finally we have a solid remix of Jazzanova's "I Can See" by Kaushik. [IR/XXL/SM/VM]

Some New/Old Janet To Hold You Over Until...?

Jimmy Jam recently revealed that he would love to do more work with Janet Jackson and pointed out that the possibility was never in doubt. He also added, "Just because you work with another producer or decide to go the other way, that that closes the door of the possibility. [sic]" Somewhere in between Damita Jo and 20YO, some Rich Harrison tracks happened. Two leaked just before the release of 20YO and two more hit the 'net (in very low quality form) in recent days. "Clap Your Hands" is signature, obvious Rich, while "What Can I Say" leaves room for doubt. In both cases, the man behind the boards is assumed until confirmed. [J|X]

SoulBounce Honors

SoulBounce Honors 2008's Producer of the Year: Nicolay

He's good.

I've been banging the drum for Nicolay since this site's inception, and being able to feature and write about him so thoroughly here has been as much a blessing as listening to his music. In 2008, Nicolay earned the distinction of being the only artist to have two album reviews published here as well as an audio interview. I even had the pleasure of seeing him live when he came to DC with Kay Jackson to perform tracks from Time:Line. Not a single album in his catalogue has skippable material, not even the straight instrumental joints. There are reasons.

Marsha Assists Jamie On Something Quite Freaky

I suppose "T-Shirt & Panties" needed some kind of upgrade, right? Between songs featuring T.I., Lil' Wayne and T-Pain, we were wondering if Jamie Foxx's Intuition (released today) had any tracks that could pass the SoulBounce Sniff Test. Sex songs are always tricky. Sometimes they are unintentionally funny or just downright offensive. When done correctly, they can be fun and titillating. Jamie has built a career upon such songs and his duet with Marsha Ambrosius, "Freak'in Me" is fairly nasty, but not in a juvenile, off-putting way that makes you feel gross. It could simply be Marsha's presence that dignifies it. Or perhaps the subtle hat-tips to Jodeci and Silk. I'm totally on board with this one, and my "Eff Music" selections are usually reduced to Janet Jackson.

  • Timbaland is back with Ginuwine, along with Bun B. [AHH]
  • BeyoncĂ©: "I want to open the door for black female entertainers and show them they can do anything." Can and should are two different things, dear. [RWS]

What's Good With G.O.O.D.?

good2u.jpgWhen Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music launched with the releases of Be and Get Lifted, many of us knew we finally had an imprint that, although nestled in the organic, textured warmth of Soul music, had enough commericial viability to push its sound and signed artists to the masses without dumbing itself down. Recent releases by Common, John Legend and Kanye himself have divided fans, and with Consequence's recent move to Motown (he's still G.O.O.D.), we have to ask if he's the remaining original act from the roster to stay the course.

Brandy's 'Human' Gets a B for 'Back'

HumanBrandy.jpgLast week Brandy released her long-awaited fifth studio album Human. Reviews have been generally favorable (on the positive side of "average" with a few digs here and there) and, to be expected, many cite her personal drama in their critical write-ups. These matters are fair game, since they helped shape the atmosphere and focus of the album--one that is contrite, bittersweet and hopeful. For anyone that was looking for more "Turn It Up" and "I Thought", put it out of your mind. It will probably take another album or two before Brandy makes you shake your ass again.

Boston Globe:

Brandy has been missed while she has faced some serious challenges - including being involved in a 2006 car accident that killed another driver - since her underrated 2004 release, "Afrodisiac." But the former "Moesha" star has never made a bad album, and she's not starting now with the appropriately rich and varied "Human."... "Human" is better than good enough. It's a light, breezy listen that shows off Brandy's resilience, humility, joy, and vibrancy.

Universal Opinions on 'Universal Mind Control'

common-umc-coverjpgWith our upcoming Christmas break in mind, along with general hesitance to either praise Common for Universal Mind Control or rip him a new one, it's looking like we won't be reviewing the album. So we look to the Internets to see what the vibe is. Common (heh) themes that run throughout these assessments are that the Neptunes are an underwhelming fit for Common's vocals and that Kanye is sorely missed, along with too much sexual bravado and conceptual unevenness. Check out this selection of reviews and don't forget to take the poll after the bounce, as well as weighing in in the comments.

The length is possibly the album's greatest savior and smartest characteristic. Coming in at just about 38 minutes, UMC allows for tons and tons of playback with plenty of easy listening material. Although, with something this short, there is minimal room for error, and of course, this album evidently has a few hiccups. It certainly isn't a lyrical masterpiece, and sadly, it isn't much of anything but a quick Common fix. Regardless, even with its laughably blatant sex talk and synth heavy production, Common has managed to create a fairly enjoyable album that would've been great as a (originally planned) summer release, a season where lyrics go to die.
