Method Man Was Also Better in the '90s

method_man.jpgI use that title in jest. Method Man is a cool, smart and funny dude, and I suspect that maybe he would enjoy this site if he ever got around to visiting it. But have any of you heard about the interview he recently did, which has been excerpted ad nauseum throughout the Internets with next to no context? Captain Obvious said Hip Hop music way better in the '90s because it was "way more grounded than it is today. Today, you don't feel the movement. Back then, you felt the movement." Agreed! But not only that. When artists back then rapped about straight-up bullsh** they did it with ten times the panache, creativity, and effort than anyone right now. But we've been saying that forever. The sad part is that this might come across as sour grapes from Meth, whose latter albums failed to perform as nicely as his debut, and people will use that to undermine his statement and continue to make excuses for the garbage popular Hip Hop of today.

Method Man would later go on to point out that water is wet and salt is salty. [DEX]

Olympic Wins Are Spawning A Hip Hop Race Of Sorts

 oly

usain-phelps2.jpgWith this year's gold medal Olympians being treated like rock stars, and after some of them revealed what gets them hyped to perform so well, you have to start to wonder when they'll really make their mark on society and enter the hallowed halls of hip hop lyric fame. I mean, doesn't Michael Phelps' hype songs including Lil Wayne and Jay-Z just scream for him to be in a rhyme, his eight gold medals notwithstanding. The folks over at Okayplayer feel the same way, too, and have penned some lyrics that would likely be spit by some popular rap artists about 100 meter Jamaican world record sprinter Usain Bolt whose name is just screaming for comparisons to thunder bolts. Just imagine Kanye saying "I said I had to bolt, girl was like 'Are U Sane?'" or Wayne saying "I run tracks like Usain, plus I Rack em like Hussein." Better still, there's a poll, with both Yeezy and Weezy taking the gold and silver respectively. In related news, Wale has been the first rapper to pen a rhyme making mention of Michael Phelps that was written two years ago. Looks like the Wheaties box may not the goal to reach when it comes to attaining a stellar sports career. [H/T: TCS]

Believe the Hype! Olympians Say Hip Hop Prepares Them to Go for the Gold

Rocky had "Eye of the Tiger." Hell, even Popeye had the spinach theme song. You know, the one song that is needed before one competes. The one that makes you go a few extra miles on the treadmill. The one that gets you focused and ready to take on all comers. What is it?  The "hype" song, of course. From "The Star Spangled Banner" to "Chariots of Fire," the hype song has been around about as long as the Olympiad. However, now that golden boy swimmer Michael Phelps revealed last week that Lil Wayne's "I'm Me" stays on repeat as he prepares for his events (and then went on to win eight. gold. medals!), it's been proven that most athletes would rather sway to hip hop's swagger than carry around a patriotic torch song.

On Monday, NBC's Today Show conducted an informal "iPod investigation," polling the athletes in Beijing to see what rocks in their ears as they prepare for competition. When you think about it, the results aren't that surprising. Phelps, in addition to Weezy, claimed Def Jam artists Jay-Z and Young Jeezy as inspiration, while Jamaican sprinter Dwight Thomas seconded Lil Wayne as his voice of choice. True, some competitors claimed Beyoncé, and even Garth Brooks and Shania Twain as their fuel. Those seem to be the exceptions to the rule, though, as hip hop has always served as an accelerator, with the booming bass and braggadocious banter causing people from the streets to track meets to feel invincible. For me, it's always been about two songs: Freeway's "What We Do" for when I'm driving (the beat is sick!) and Naughty by Nature's "Uptown Anthem" (hello? Harlem!) for when I'm about to go play ball. Put either of those on, and I'm mean-muggin' and ready to go!

What about you?  What's the one song that gets you ready to rumble?  What's your "hype" song?

Hip Hop Honors Committee Vindicates Itself...Sort Of

delasoul-slickrick-hiphophonors.jpgProving once again that it continues to have relevance among a public for whom "old school" means "last year," the VH1's Hip Hop Honors is set to roll out the red carpet for its 2008 honorees this October 7th. Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Slick Rick, Naughty By Nature and Too $hort will all be feted with the Honors' usual court jester, Tracy Morgan. Last year we gave our picks as to who should be honored. The overwhelming majority agreed that both De La Soul and Slick Rick are long overdue in their recognition. I'm still confused as to why A Tribe Called Quest received their honor before De La Soul who introduced Native Tongues to a wider audience than the Jungle Brothers ever could. And to that end, where are the ladies? Queen Latifah is long overdue and likely has "had it up to here" over not being honored yet. I'm scratching my head a bit about Naughty By Nature and Cypress Hill being named, especially when it's simply a shame that EPMD, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Gang Starr haven't been honored yet either. And as far as Too $hort is concerned, no comment from this blogger who never understood what the hype about his "freaky tales" was about. In any case, I'm sure it'll be fun all around, as long as Vivica Fox doesn't show up and try to dance around on stage like she's the fourth member of Salt-N-Pepa. Oy

Q-Tip Shows Us A 'Renaissance' in the Making

Of course, by now we're all aware that Q-Tip's sophomore disc, The Renaissance, will hit the shelves on October 14th (please mark your calendars). We can't wait. Over the weekend, a video shot by Tip's cousin Consequence surfaced, showing the former ATCQ front man gettin' busy on the wheels of steel--hopefully presumably mixing a song for the much-anticipated album. We'll assume he won't mind us posting this footage of him doing his thing. And hope this two-minute clip can hold us over until the release date. Enjoy.

Is This LL Cool J's 'Exit 13' Cover? Really?

exit 13El Todd the Sex God's Def Jam swan song is named after the most unlucky number in the world. It's called Exit 13 and is meant to be released on 8/26, about two years after it was originally intended. 50 Cent is involved in some executive capacity. And this recently revealed cover depicts some sort of bedlam unleashed upon the world. Does this mean LL is going out with a bang? Who knows? The only thing we can surmise from this apocalyptic artwork is that perhaps He of the Mighty Pecs wants to remind the Hip Hop world that he still has some fight in him, and his microphone can still bust this game wide open, with some prayer and a few special effects. After the bounce, check out a vintage interview with Uncle L in which he says he'd rather rap about being a lover as opposed to making songs about the ghetto and doing "message rap."

Is Nas Better With DJ Premier or With Dr. Dre?

MTV is reporting that Nas wants to pull another blog-baiting stunt in the near future. See, he has this wacky idea, or "dream," that he can drop two albums in the same day--one entirely produced by DJ Premier, who's responsible for some of Nasir's most phenomenal tracks like "NY State of Mind," and one produced by Dr. Dre, who did that Firm bullsh*t. I'm very critical of today's Nas, because I don't think he should speak in public. Also, everytime he has an idea, I always feel like the concepts are way bigger than him and he no longer has the chops to pull it off without eliciting a shrug from me. But he seems to know this:

I'm doing my dream. If you could, wouldn't you do it? What else would you do? Every time I do something, it's, 'Oh, he's doing it because this and that.' Since my first album, everybody has an explanation of why. What am I supposed to be doing here? So I wanna drop the Dre album and the Premier album on the same day. That's what I'm thinking."

Yes, Nas, we cast a keen eye on all of your musical decisions because you've not only dropped some stinkers (most of your post-It Was Written work), but you've also made some really dumb choices (anything Braveheart or QB's Finest-related). However, I raise my glass to the prospect of an all Nas/Primo album, because I think they bring out the best in each other, and because maybe it will remind me of how Hip Hop was before I started using this website to complain about it everyday.

Illa Keeps Dilla Alive on New Project

illaj.jpgJ Dilla was never the type of producer to make a couple of hot tracks then rest on his laurels; the cat stayed in the studio, churning out beat after beat with each one sounding nothing like the one that came before it. He passed in 2006, but left behind a dense collection of unheard work. His brother John "Illa J" Yancey, 12 years James' junior, is set to release his own album, fortified by Dilla's beats. What inspired the project was some unreleased Dilla material recorded during the production of The Pharcyde's Labcabincalifornia, passed to Illa by Delicious Vinyl founder, Michael Ross. The project, which should largely be considered a collaboration rather than a solo album, is serendipitous since it will be released on Delicious Vinyl, the same label that released Labcabincalifornia. No word on the name yet, but we'll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out the video for "Won't Do," starring Illa as Dilla after the bounce.
