An Open Letter to the Artist Formerly Known For Starring in Broadway's 'The Color Purple'

fantasia_bigred.jpgDear Fantasia,

Let me start this by saying how much I love you. Seriously. People have called me Stan-tasia behind my back at times. Yours was the only season I ever voted for any contestant on the current travesty formerly known as American Idol. Heck, I even had my mother voting for you numerous times each week (and have the phone bill receipts to prove it) after that tear-inducing, emotional one-minute, thirty-second masterpiece that was your version of "Summertime" from Porgy & Bess. I raced out and bought your debut CD, Free Yourself, and subsequently wrote a glowing review.

Omarion, Michael Jackson Called And He Wants His Act Back

Last night on Dancing With the Stars the elimination round of the reality competition was rudely interrupted by Omarion performing a Michael Jackson Thriller tribute. I will say that the first part of the tribute showcasing the dancers only was halfway decent and I liked the African dance breakdown to "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," but then Omarion took the stage and it went downhill from there. Yes, the dude can dance, but he lacked the finesse to convincingly carry off MJ's moves. I suppose that Ne-Yo was too busy making more pseudo-house tracks for his new CD and Chris Brown was occupied with turning 19 and all, but they would have surely done a better job than Mr. Grandberry. To add insult to injury, O also lip-synced his vocals, which come to think about it probably wasn't a bad idea. I'm just saying.

Did You Catch Tina Turner and Cher on 'Oprah'?

Drag queens nationwide lost their sh** last week when legends Tina Turner and Cher joined Oprah from beyond the grave for a rare television performance and interview at Casar's Palace. All jokes aside, the two of them look fabulous. Tina is 68 and Cher is 61, but you can't tell from those legs! This is also when Tina revealed that she was coming out of "retirement" to go on tour again. I cannot imagine how these ladies continue to do show after show while Janet Jackson, at a sprite 40-years-old, can't crawl up from under Q*bert long enough to hit Madison Square Garden. It boggles the mind.

Snoop Dogg on 'One Life to Lizzle'

ABC has really been pulling out all the stops to regain viewership for it's daytime serials. One person they haven't lost is me, especially where One Life to Live is concerned. But since this isn't a soap opera site, I won't bother giving any background info as to why Snoop Dogg is in Llanview, or why the clip that follows after the bounce opens with John-Paul Lavoisier shirtless and drunk. Thanks to Eskay for the intel and, as stated before, I need a job.

Alicia Keys Was Smoking On 'Letterman' Last Night

Alicia Keys has been coming out of her sexy bag in a major way lately. Last night she appeared on Late Night with David Letterman to sing her new single "Teenage Love Affair" and she looked and sounded phenomenal. She had a whole '60s girl group vibe going on with her two female backup singers, which perfectly matches the song. Enjoy the performance below and peep Dave not wanting to let Alicia go when he greeted her after the performance.

For more sweet eye candy from Alicia bounce on over to Concrete Loop for flicks of her wearing the hell out of that gray dress.

Ne-Yo Meets Angie and Jesse

In the recent past One Life To Live has featured performances by Timbaland, Erykah Badu and Mary J. Blige (Snoop Dogg forthcoming). Not to be outdone, All My Children has recruited Ne-Yo to appear at Angie and Jesse's second wedding to serenade the couple, we presume. A bit of background: Angie and Jesse are the first Black supercouple in the history of daytime television. About 20 years ago, Jesse was shot and "killed," but because this is a soap, Jesse's back even though he appeared as "ghost Jesse" at some point and Angie had a child with Jacob, otherwise known as "doppleganger Jesse." Ne-Yo appears 5/21 and 5/22, and I need a job. [USAT]

Gnarls Barkley Made 'Saturday Night' A Lot More Live

Saturday night I was out and about giving my couch a much-needed break from my behind, and I totally forgot to set the DVR to record Saturday Night Live with special musical guests Gnarls Barkley. Who knew I coulda stayed home and shook a tailfeather with Cee-Lo, Danger Mouse and their funky '60s-inspired band? Freak what you heard, this is one of the best performances I've seen on SNL in a minute or ten. Watch their high-spirited performance of "Run" below before Da Man takes it down.

Lil Kim Added To Cast Of 'Nip/Tuck'

lil_asian_kim.jpgAfter stellar performances in the hit movies Juwanna Mann, Nora's Hair Salon and Gang of Roses, Lil Kim's impressive acting resume will get even longer with her addition to the cast of the controversial F/X series Nip/Tuck. The pint-sized rapper and plastic surgery aficionado will play a character who is tired of being Black and wants to transform herself into an Asian woman. Talk about art imitating life!

Rumor has it that she may even become involved in a love triangle between the series stars Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon. It's no secret that McMahon's character Dr. Christian Troy will hit anything walking with a pulse, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Filming for the next season of Nip/Tuck is scheduled to begin in the fall, so this gives Kim enough time to continue with her own physical transformation in preparation for the role and won't interfere with her judging duties on Girlicious.

Stay Up For the 'Late Show' Featuring Mary and Jay

mary_j_blige_jay_z_concert.jpg

Tour mates Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z will take a quick break from their sold-out concerts this Friday to appear together on CBS' Late Show with David Letterman. Not only will their joint appearance mark the first time they've shared the stage on the talk show, it will also give those unable to afford tickets a small taste of what the real deal is like.

Oh, and for those searching their ticket stubs to make sure the appearance doesn't mean a postponement of a Mary-Jay show in their city, fret not. Friday was a scheduled off-day for the tour after a scheduled show in Boston, MA on April 3rd and just before they jet to Greensboro, NC on the 5th, which makes the duo's work ethic all the more admirable. Can't knock the hustle, for real.

More 'Reality' Shows From Pseudo-Celebrities To Not Admit You're Watching

The writers strike has been hard on all of us. And now that it's over, I don't know what's worse: the many unemployed writers or the cheapness of the networks who refuse to utilize the creative talents of the ones that are employed. The answer to the lack of new shows has been to either bring back new versions of old shows we once loved (I swore I saw $25,000 Pyramid on the other day) or to continue to trend of concocting some of the most ridiculous (un)reality shows ever to be greenlit by network executives.

Here are a few for your consideration in order of ascending idiocy/ignorance:

rock_the_cradle.jpg
First up is MTV's Rock The Cradle, which pits former pop stars' children against each other to see who of them actually has talent beyond maxing out credit cards or sneaking into late-night hot spots. Sure, both the crazy dude from Twisted Sister's and one of The Doobie Brothers' kids are both on the show, but we're most interested in the spawn of Bobby Brown, MC Hammer, and Al B Sure! Landon Brown, A'Keiba Burrell, and "Little Al B Sure!" who is not to be confused with Diddy's stepson who I always called mini-Al B Sure! in my head.

Badu Does Ellen On Friday

Hurry home and set your Betamax machines to record Erykah Badu on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this Friday. Badu will be singing her daytime television friendly hit "Honey," and she may even chop it up with the wacky host.

Until Badu takes over Ellen, enjoy this clip of her singing "Annie" from her recent VH1 SoulStage performance. I love this little ditty about this fast-tail girl who "don't wear no panties." Just keep her away from R. Kelly.

And for those wondering, this is the track that Erykah sings in that Outkast "Hey Ya"-themed scene in the "Honey" vid. "Annie" will be included on Low Down Loretta Brown, which is in line to drop later this year after New Amerykah Pt 2: Return of The Ankh.

Leona Lewis Gets The Oprah Seal Of Approval

Yesterday afternoon Leona Lewis made her US television debut on the holy grail of daytime TV, The Oprah Winfrey Show. Auntie O had Simon Cowell on and he brought the X-Factor star out to sing her hit song "Bleeding Love." Oprah and her audience ate Leona up with the biggest spoon in town. Although I'm a little tired of this single by now, thanks to her appearance yesterday, "Bleeding Love" has skyrocketed to the top of the iTunes singles chart. (Sorry, Lil Mama and Usher--actually, no I'm not.)  Now if Leona could only get some real soulful material to dig into, she'd really impress me. Nonetheless, this sista is "the real deal" to hear Oprah tell it.
