On Michael Jackson's 50th, AOL Keeps it Classy

michael-jackson-changes-z-200a082608.jpg"What does Michael Jackson make you think of?" AOL's PopEater polls it's readers, "His music, his plastic surgery, the scandals, or other?" Well, it appears they aren't really giving them a fair choice, as they have a photo gallery chronicling his "50 Faces in 50 Years." Good heavens! Not that I'm a stan for MJ (I reserve that behavior for Janet, who's about one can of Jesus Juice away from being just as loco), but could his plastic surgery be an easier mark? The topic isn't so unavoidable that there can't be discussions about everything else. Maybe I'm being a little too generous and self-righteous today. To their credit, they didn't say he looked like the ghost of Joan Crawford, which is admirable. However, it would be nice if, on the man's birthday, everyone could say something positive about Michael Jackson. Then tomorrow we can go back to calling him the lovechild of Mickey Mouse and Casper. 'The nOva Kirk-Out Prevention Initiative'

behindthebounce.jpgMajor props to DJ Stylus for godfathering the new mission. As many of you know, SoulBounce was featured on the Friday Favecast in celebration of our birthday. The interview was fun, chilled, and quite revealing! You'll learn juicy SoulBouncey secrets such as:

  • The real reason SoulBounce.com was founded.
  • If any of the SB Team has a life outside of the Internet.
  • What the SoulBounce HNIC really thinks of the music industry.
  • And what certain Hellfire will befall The Internets should SoulBounce not win any Black Weblog Awards.
Additionally, if anyone is deserving of another "Best Podcast" award, it's definitely the man Fave. Not only because he shows us the kind of love only matched by Butta's obsession with love of Eric Roberson, but he's just dope. Funny, engaging, insanely professional, talented and knows good music. So nominate The Friday Favecast for the Black Weblog Awards' podcast category and nominate us for everything else. Kidding!

But, seriously, could you?

Is About.com's List of the 'Best Rap Albums of the 90s' Random, or Just Common Sense?

illmatic.jpgAlthough some of you out there may not like it, we talk about Hip Hop here at SoulBounce. There will probably never come a day that we won't. That being said, I happened upon About.com's Best Rap Albums of the 90s via DIGG, and thought it would be a great discussion piece. Mainly because, although there are the obvious can't-do-without choices like Illmatic, Ready to Die, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Things Fall Apart, I find myself scratching my head at the inclusion of Missy's Da Real World. Huh? The Slim Shady LP? (Eminem was super-annoying before he got good) CNN's War Report? (Which, I happened to like but it was by no means a "best" anything.) The write-ups for each album are extremely brief with purchase links, so methinks this was more or less meant to be a revenue-generating SEO kinda thing, as opposed to a dense analysis. But we've got to give 'em props for including Main Source, Jeru, and Souls of Mischief. [About]

Erykah Badu Says 'Kiss My Placenta'

ErykahBadu.jpgErykah Badu is PISSED, y'all. Pissed like, when people judge you for having more than one "baby daddy." Only, that is the reason she's pissed. (Okay, make that was pissed since this happened last Friday, but we were on break and are still playing catch-up, so whatever.) It appears some users on the Okayplayer forums have been talking real greasy about her parenting situation, as if Erykah Badu herself (handle: "analoguegirl") doesn't frequent the boards and won't say anything in response, which is, at a minimum, asinine. If anyone has any intel on what exactly lead to this, please let us know in the feedback, but I'm going to jump on her side anyway, after a snippet of her post:

every relationship i have been in was because i loved the person DEARLY and was dedicated to us "exclusively" FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS.

the fathers of my children are my brothers and friends / we have a great deal of respect for one another and always will. / WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN TO NO END. / we took our own "vows" and CONTINUE TO UPHOLD THEM. / AND THAT IS WHAT THAT IS .

question? / WHAT IS MARRIAGE ? / WHO IS THE JUDGE? / WE ONLY UNDERSTAND THE EXAMPLES WE ARE GIVEN ( well sort of)

I'm guessing this runs rather deep?

A Likely, Recent History of Things We'd Rather Forget (but can't, because of lists like this)

wardrobemalfunction.jpgIf ever you wanted to re-live Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction and Beyoncé's tumble down a flight of stairs all in one place, look no further than the JamsBio's blog, which has compiled a list of the Most Embarrassing Music Moments Caught on Tape. Perhaps the fun of going through these items is deciding who deserves to be pointed at and laughed at versus who doesn't. Take for example Britney Spears who otherwise has no business being mentioned on our site, but whose VMA performance was more sad and uncomfortable than funny, whereas Ashlee Simpson's SNL snafu is tres hilar, so I'm pointing and laughing emphatically! The best thing about this roundup is how reader response encouraged the blogger to include Milli Vanilli's entire career as a "Most Embarrassing" item, which is interesting because that would mean we'd all have to admit that they were actually pretty terrible pre-reveal. And I'm okay with that. [via DIGG]

The Sincerest Form of Flattery (That Doesn't Get Us Any Hits)

We got to give it up to our man Vikter Duplaix for unintentionally pointing us in the direction of some foolishness. When we saw that Vik had posted our "25 Things That Killed (and are Still Killing) Urban Music" list in a Myspace bulletin, we were ecstatic! That could only mean he reads SoulBounce. But, strangely, the bulletin ended with this:

Urban Network wants to get your input on this op-ed, send your responses to dmitchell@urbannetwork.com.
Ahh, so he got it from The Urban Network. It's posted here. If you look closely, you'll see no citation, no link, no credit and no mention of SoulBounce, which is basic "internettiquette". Why, it's almost as if the "Anonymous" individual that submitted it to The Urban Network would have you believe they emailed dozens of friends and got the input of co-editors and slaved over that listicle for a week. Oh, and instead of a witty rejoinder like XXL, "Anonymous" posted it verbatim; a straight up copy/paste jack. At SoulBounce, we pride ourselves on providing our audience with original content. We may quote, we may paraphrase, but we always tip the hat. We get that we're dope, but what's dopeness without proper attribution?

Since I'm nothing if not diplomatic, I did email dmitchell to let him/her know "25 Things That Killed (and are Still Killing) Urban Music" originated with my own personal blood, sweat and keyboard. I also informed dmitchell that if no correction was made on The Urban Network I would be airing them out at 12 noon.

Oh look. It's 12:05.

Side-Eye Alert: Brandy is Second to Ray-J Now?

What better way to start the morning than with a little good-natured ribbing aimed at our friends at Black Voices? We keep a good eye on our linking partners at SBHQ, so imagine my reaction when I saw this headline over at BV Buzz:

brandy-bv-sshot-small.jpg

Color me verklempt or just old and overly-nostalgic. We are truly living in the end-times if Brandy is being referred to as Ray-J's sister. See, this ain't no Michael/Janet type of thing. No matter how independent and popular Janet became, somewhere in our collective subconscious, Michael always came first. No matter what. And she never did a sextape (that we know of). Upon further exploration the headline is qualified with the following:

Gap Band, Chi-Lites 'Inappropriate' After 9/11 Attacks

chi-lites.jpgWhen it comes to enterprises like Clear Channel and Wikimedia, who do you trust the most? So far, the alledged List of songs deemed inappropriate by Clear Channel Post-9/11 has received over 1,300 diggs, catapulting it into our inbox. The existence of such a list had been debated, then confirmed supposedly by Hits Daily Double. The list itself is mostly compiled of Rock classics with "questionable lyrics", such as AC/DC's "Safe in New York City" and Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust". But there are a few songs on there that have us scratching our heads. The Chi-Lites' "Have You Seen Her", Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and Sinatra's "New York, New York" might be too sentimental, but certainly not inappropriate due to lyrical content. Suggesting that a song not be played because it's offensive is one thing, but including songs that invoke bittersweet nostalgia blurs the lines more than a little. The Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb", we totally understand. The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" ("Blow up like the World Trade") is nowhere to be found. [Wiki via Digg]

House Podcasts You Need to Be Rocking To

In the absence of the official Mixtape Roundup (I swear it's coming back, ya'll) and in celebration of our light House Music Week that sort of coincides with The Winter Music Conference, I've decided to put together a list of Soulful House podcasts that you need to be subscribing to at this very moment. These podcasts are chiefly how I keep up with House music, since the genre itself is so dense and is associated with so few broadly recognizable names. I now extend the wealth to you, the SoulBounce Reader.

If I'm missing anyone, drop a comment and I'll add it to the list post-haste.
