Delicious Gutter is an EP that features two classic Young MC and Masta Ace vocal tracks set to Baltimore gutter beats. I have to admit that I had never heard of Baltimore gutter music as a genre or even subgenre of house music until the video for the remix of Young MC's "Know How Theme" came to my attention. Apparently, there is a segment of the population that adores Young MC and knows more of his catalogue of songs then just "Bust A Move." Notably, Aaron La Crate and Debonair Samir, two of Gutter music's top DJs, still hold a flame for Young MC. To quote La Crate,
"When I was a kid growing up in Baltimore I loved Young MC. I would make mixtapes where one side would be up-tempo club jams and the other side would be golden era hip-hop. So now for me and Samir to merge them into one thing is a dream come true."
Dream come true, huh? I'm not so sure about that one, bruh. It took all of my strength to listen to the entire track. Let's just say Gutter music is not my bag. But the video for this track which features a clip of a sprite Young MC on The Arsenio Hall Show has me wishing for 1988 and beat boxing on lunch tables. More info about this project can be found via Delicious Vinyl's website and MySpace page.
Another week, another batch of new videos. First up we have Jesse Boykins III who breaks us off with a video that features him trying to make it right with his woman while making his way around NYC. In the middle, we have UK songstress Adele with a video for her second single once again showcasing her soulful sounds. Last up is rapper Buff1
with a clip that has lots of colorful visuals and some decent lyricism.
Apparently, a lot of people love Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama these days. R&B singer Shanice--yes, that Shanice--is the latest artist to plant themselves firmly on Team Obama with a song appropriately entitled "The President We Need." The track first appeared last week on her MySpace page, and just yesterday, an accompanying video popped up on YouTube. Endorsements aside, it's great to hear Shanice's vocals again. Her last release was 2006's Every Woman Dreams. This latest offering is undoubtedly a warm-up to the new album she's promising for later this year. We'll definitely keep you posted on that. In the meantime, check the Obama-love clip below and get caught up in the photo montage. I know I did.
We love Anthony David like a play cousin over here at SoulBounce. After getting behind his groove a few weeks ago, we're really hoping that
his major label debut does well and gets him the recognition that he deserves. In this clip, Anthony gives us some more of his backstory and laces it with his signature wit. This video also features behind-the-scenes footage from his upcoming music video for "Words" with his homegirl India.Arie. Good stuff from a great artist.
N*E*R*D's video for "Everyone Nose" has finally premiered. After seeing the sneak peek earlier this week, the video just seems like two more minutes of the same. Yawn. Lindsay Lohan's overly hyped up appearance in the clip was unnecessary at best, but what would an ode to nose candy be without her? Watch the video if you want to see some girl-on-girl action, Pharrell playing photog, Kanye playing Kanye, a raucous club scene, and certain frames replaced with the words "Removed By Request." I'm almost scared to find out what exactly they removed.
You might want to turn down your speakers if you're at work watching this. In the following hilarious clip, Jermaine Dupri cuts a fool because Usher has to "share" a Billboard magazine cover with recent SESAC Award winnerDanja. According to JD, this is "what's wrong with the music industry" when someone like Usher who has sold tens of millions of records and is the biggest R&B/Pop star to walk the earth since Jesus was a boy has to take a backseat to someone else. "No disrespect to who this is on the cover," JD says. It might worth pointing out that Danja produced "Appetite" for Here I Stand and "Migrate" for Mariah. I'm sure JD knows this.
Since premiering this track back in January from N*E*R*D's upcoming Seeing Sounds, "Everyone Nose" left little to the imagination when it came to its subject matter. And now that we've seen sneak peek of the video, complete with the prerequisite's for a N*E*R*D video, youngish girls and glitter, all that was left too add was lots of shots of bathroom stalls and index finger swipes under the nose. There's nothing quite like cocaina references to garner some attention for your new album, huh N*E*R*D?
Gnarls Barkley's previous video from their latest, The Odd Couple, did not catch my fancy, but after only watching the first thirty seconds of their newest video "Going On," it is certifiably hot! It features kids from the Motherland Jamaica dancing down the street and showcasing some dope dance moves, including the patented James Brown slide. The song's upbeat vibe carries on as yet another song emerges from their updated '60s soul-themed album. There's even a strange sci-fi twist at the end! No more professions of love for this video. Watch for yourself and see.
Guru and his partner in rhyme, super producer Solar, are back with a video from his latest offering Guru's Jazzmatazz the Mixtape: The Timebomb (Back To The Future). The video itself is aight, but it's the track that samples from Black Moon's classic "Who Got Da Props" that has me open. Joining Guru to spit a few bars is DJ Doo Wop reppin' the Bronx lovely. But it's that man Guru straight outta Boston who, after twenty plus years in the game, still got a wicked flow.
This week a batch of four vocalists have taken over the new video roundup. First up we have Calvin Richardson who has returned to the scene and is looking mighty tasty in his first video from his upcoming CD. Next we have newlywed Mariah Carey with her latest slow jam featuring her publicity stunt Nick Cannon. Third in rotation is newcomer Steph Jones who may want to rethink this singing thing and stick to being eye candy; I'm just saying. Last up for the week is UK cutie Craig David with his latest video from his newly released disc.
Although Rahsaan Patterson's most recent album, Wines & Spirits, was released last September it's taken until now for the first video to be released. However, anything from Rahsaan is definitely worth the wait. This video for the song "Feels Good" features him singing with lovers frolicking, hugged up or in various states of bliss. I already couldn't get enough of this song and now it looks like the video will be my latest obsession.
Despite many of the unfortunate circumstances that have shaped him as an artist, Lyfe Jennings doesn't take himself too seriously. And how could he, sitting across from Jimmy Kimmel? Tuesday night, the raspy-voiced crooner sat down with Mr. Funnyman to discuss his latest offering, Lyfe Change, in a hilarious interview that preceded the performance of his second single "Never Never Land." If you thought there wasn't any humor to be found in learning to play the guitar from a convicted murderer, think again.
Remember back in February when we posted a poll for people to choose Algebra's next single from her debut album, Purpose? The majority of voters chose "Run and Hide" over "Halfway" and sure enough it's got next. You'll probably be hearing the song on your radio soon, but if not you can watch the video without further delay below. Algebra can be seen fronting an all-female band and choosing from a number of would-be male suitors before she finds Mr. Right. I'm sure that "I Love Algebra" t-shirt he's rocking may have had something to do with it.
It looks like Jive is putting their back into Raheem DeVaughn's
latest album and releasing another single from the disc with an accompanying video. Surprise, surprise! Although "Try Again" wouldn't have been my pick to be the third single, I'm just happy that Rah's Love Behind the Melody is getting some love from the record company after they held his album hostage for so long. This clip finds DeVaughn riding around Washington, DC in a sweet vintage Cadillac and hanging with his video boo. I recognized a couple of District landmarks such as the Washington National Cathedral and the interior of the posh Hotel Rouge with their funky animal print carpet and red walls. And don't ask me how I know that. Moving right along, enjoy the video.
Why didn't anybody warn me that Kardinal Offishall was now down with the devil part of Akon's camp? After working with a handful of artists who I really dig (Glenn Lewis, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Sean Paul and, most recently, Estelle), I'm truly at a loss about how this tragedy happened without my knowledge. I suppose the Canadian dancehall/hip-hop ambassador wants to try his hand at getting crossover success in the U.S. But with Akon? My head hurts just thinking about this. For those who care, Kardinal Offishall's his new CD on the Kon Live label, Not 4 Sale, drops on June 4th. Clearly he's not talking about his soul.
Oh, and feel free to watch the video for the first single "Dangerous" below if you can stand to hear his new bossman "singing" throughout. I already made the mistake. Try watching it on mute.
