There seem to be two types of Black movies these days: the ghetto, stereotypical, joke free-for-all, e.g. Three Strikes or Booty Call; or the family-centered Black bourgeois movie, e.g. Soul Food or Something New.
Couple all the Black actors you can grab with both hands and the fact that for many of us, Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" song, and you have the November release of the aptly titled This Christmas. Idris Elba, Laurence Fishburne, Delroy Lindo, both Sharon Leal and Keith Robinson of Dreamgirls fame, Regina King, Loretta Divine, Chris Brown for the young'un's, and others all star. From what we've seen from the trailer, it's a hodgepodge of Soul Food family drama, a Preacher's Wife mix of church and Christmastime, and an interracial subplot à la Something New. After the 11/2/07 release of American Gangster, this could provide a nice balance to the seriousness of this Denzel flick.
