Sharon Jones has one of those voices that you'd expect to hear in a juke joint on Saturday night and in a gospel choir on Sunday morning. And with her appearance on the soundtrack for the upcoming film, The Great Debaters, she has songs to satisfy the ears of both sinners and saints alike.
Ms. Jones was handpicked by Denzel Washington, director and star of the film, to sing on a few tracks that he selected from the pre-1935 time period in which the movie is set. The Great Debaters tells the true story of the first debate team from a small African-American college that went on to challenge Harvard University in the national championship. The film is scheduled to open on Christmas Day, but the soundtrack hits stores on December 11th.
So while you're chillin' with Big Mama and the fam this weekend, put these cuts on and watch them remember the good old days--in and out of church.
