Eliot Spitzer's R&B Jumpoff (Bounce-Worthy?)

kristen-alex.jpgIf drug dealers can become rappers there's no reason ladies of the night can't be singers. Besides, who would know more about the pimp game than someone that actually made those transactions in real life? Ashley Alexandra Dupré is one such young lady. Referred to in a federal affidavit as a prostitute named "Kristen" that engaged in an affair with New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, Ashley comes with the kind of bluesy backstory ripe for a classic R&B album--complete with abandonment, drugs, and poverty.

In some way, it's understandable that she'd enter into the oldest profession in the world, and props to her for doing it in a such a classy way rather than flagging down cars at unconscionable hours of the night. But was there at least one more option for this beautiful girl? We'll never know, that is, until she releases a tell-all book within the next few minutes. Also, because we're not these perfect, 100% pure people, let us not judge her for her chosen profession; let's instead ruminate on how bad her song is.

According to the Daily Swarm, the price of Ashley's "What We Want" has gone from $0.19 to $0.98 on mp3 download store Amie Street. To be sure, this is by virtue of a salacious sex scandal involving a freshly replaced New York state official, certainly not because of the track's own merits. It's a trite, monotonous mess with hollow instrumentation, lyrics that register a step below likely and phoned-in vocals. It's like listening to Cassie without that certain bizarre thing that makes Cassie "viable." Among the influences and idols listed on her Myspace page are Mary, Aretha, Etta, Whitney, Lauryn and Amy, which points to an acknowledgment of surviving hardships to become a diva rather than any vocal inspirations.

But there may be hope for her yet. We imagine Ashley will be among the first acts signed to Warner Brothers by way of Perez Hilton's A&R deal.
