Meth & Red Have Trouble Keeping Up With Themselves

HowHighRedmanMethodMan.jpgWith the news of Method Man and Redman possibly working on Blackout 2, we have to wonder if this is their last ditch effort to remain relevant in a game that has all but forgotten about [1] New York, [2] rappers over the age of 35 (unless you're Jay-Z), [3] rappers that smoke weed instead of freebasing Nyquil, and [4] rappers that like to be silly without making up dances.

To be sure, Meth and Red as a duo have the inenviable habit of striking when the iron is below zero. Look at when they finally got around to releasing Blackout! It was 1999, four years after "How High" from The Show's soundtrack. Although the Blackout album did have a few mini-hits ("Da Rockwilda" being the most popular) it felt belated as hell. Keep in mind that this was only after their flawless guest spots on 2Pac's "Got My Mind Made Up" and LL Cool J's "4, 3, 2, 1", which would earn more attention for igniting the LL/Canibus beef and solidifying DMX as the next great thing we should care about. This was also after it was proven that Tical 2000 and Doc's the Name had none of the sustainability of Meth and Red's earlier albums, although they were both certified platinum.

Post-Blackout! they would finally team up for a film called How High, seven years after their biggest hit of the same name. (Oddly, they passed on naming their album How High because it was "too obvious".) Then 2004 brought about the Meth & Red show which no one, not even the stars, liked. So now that Red Gone Wild and 4:21 have quietly bricked, the two of them are "in bed" together once again. It's 2008, and if/when Blackout 2 drops (supposedly this summer), it will be almost a decade after the first one.

I suppose being late is something normal for people that take weednaps and were signed to Def Jam before the turn of the century.
