Behind the Groove with Raphael Saadiq

When you put the words "musical" and "genius" together there are a few artists who should immediately come to mind: Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Prince. However, there is another artist who is sometimes overlooked but just as worthy of inclusion into this pantheon of greatness: Raphael Saadiq. He is a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, businessman and visionary who has touched every musical genre from R&B, to soul, to pop, to hip hop, to neo-soul with nothing less than stellar results.

As a member of the groups Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl, Raphael has created a cavalcade of iconic hits, but where he really tends to shine is on his solo material. Nowhere is this better heard than on his latest album, The Way I See It. This disc is a throwback to the Motown sound, and he is one of the few artists to get it right. And boy does he get it right on The Way I See It, which is his best work to date.

Listen to this edition of Behind the Groove to find out about why he chose to record a classic soul-sounding record, his creative process behind The Way I See It, how he got Stevie Wonder on this record and which group may be making a return. According to Raphael, "Music lives inside of me." Yes it does.

  1. This was a great interview! Glad you got to speak to him. I have long been a fan and I think my fandom will grow with this new release.
People, when he comes to your area, do NOT miss him. His stage show is one of THE best I've seen this year...and I've seen 26!
His fantasy concert lineup, now that I would gladly shell out $150 bones PLUS for! *faints at the thought*

  2. Saadiq is the bomb. I love his music and artistry. Instant V touched my soul on so many levels. Can't wait for the new joint.

  3. "100 yard dash" is my jam...too bad its only 2 minutes long lol

  4. LOL!
Butta definitely was on "fan" mode during this interview HAHAHA!
