Behind the Groove with Mary Mary

btg-marymary.jpgErica and Tina Campbell, collectively known as Mary Mary, are not your grandmother's gospel singers. Yes, the lively duo is grounded in the Word and Christ-centered, but you are just as likely to hear their songs played on secular radio stations or in clubs as you would hear them in church service on Sunday morning. And they are fine with that.

The Atkins sisters (they both married men with the last name Campbell) first burst onto the scene in 2000 with the song "Shackles (Praise You)" and turned the praise party out with the catchy, uptempo gospel tune. They haven't slowed down with their danceable inspirational music and their latest hit "Get Up" is another song that makes you want to move in the name of the Lord.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down to chat with Erica and Tina about the new album, how gospel artists are real people too, working with David Banner and their hopes ministry of music reaches as many people as possible wherever and however it can. Amen to that!

  1. When I heard their new single "Get Up" for the first time, I could not believe that it was them. That's my current jam of the moment. Their album is good as well.

  2. Thanks so much for the interview, Butta! I love how they keep it real and honest instead of trying to put on some show like they're perfect. Their new album is simply amazing... there are so many styles, the hooks get stuck in your head, the production is just plain superb, the harmonies are tight... even the lyrics are breathtaking! The Sound is easily one of the best albums of 2008. Kierra KiKi Sheard just released a really good album also. And the Gotta Have Gospel 6 is a tight compilation. So I've definitely satiated my gospel craving this month.

  3. Is the chick on the left white? or is this another case of the Beyonce fiasco a few months ago?

  4. no stoney, she isn't white, she just wears her hair blond. but i can't wait to get this album! i have all 3 previous albums and loved every single one, know every single word to nearly every single song on each lol..and oh yeah, i'll definitely be getting kiki's new one as well!

  5. So many levels of appalled that "Christ-centered" musicians are pairing up with David Banner of "Cum girl, I'm tryna get your pussy wet" fame.
What thought process was involved in that decision?
