Is Thru-You The New Wave Of Sampling?

As postulated yesterday, Hip Hop's need to create new music without relying on sometimes expensive samples has hopefully fostered a creativity that we haven't seen since the days of "yes, yes, y'all." But let's be real, Hip Hop has influenced just about every genre of music out there. It would stand to reason, therefore, that this wave of creativity has caused many others to "take it back to the essence," so to speak. Thru-You, the brainchild of DJ and musician Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel, is a prime example of such ingenious sampling. Using various video clips, Kutiman has been able to create a mashup of layered harmonies and is truly awesome to watch. It's reassurring to know that there exist true artists whose ability to create a song isn't based solely on how much their record label is willing to shell out for a sample. Hopefully this trend continues with just as awesome results. A couple of my favorite videos are below and after the bounce.

  1. I've seen it done before, but it still amazes me every time. Still more original than anything urban radio plays.

  2. someone referred to this project as the Endtroducing... of YouTube and i totally agree. Kutiman is to video samples what DJ Shadow was to audio samples with his debut album. meticulously sequenced and carefully thought out.

  3. yo, i know this guy Kutiman. he is a true genius artist. Respect to him and his amazing project. from me and from
