In an ironic turn of events, Grammy-nominated singer (and SoulBounce favorite) Wayna was arrested yesterday in Houston on a third degree felony weapons charge. Blog Bloom Effect reported that Wayna was detained and questioned at the Houston Airport after security personnel discovered that she had a billy club in her carry-on bag while as she was en route to Miami to attend the Winter Music Conference. Fans of the Ethiopian-born, D.C.-based artist know that the singer has a song entitled "Billy Club" that speaks on police brutality. Wayna uses the billy club as a prop during live performances of the song. In spite of explaining this to security, she was still arrested and charged.

What is shocking about this incident is not the fact that Wayna, who claims to have no criminal record whatsoever, got caught with the weapon. It is that Wayna claims that she has brought the prop along with her in checked luggage all over the country with no problem. Something is amiss there. You know across-the-board, security personnel at airports aren't playing when it comes to the smallest of suspicious items, much less a billy club. In light of this incident, Wayna commented that this ordeal has "given her new and personal perspective" to the concepts and themes she includes in her art.

Here is a clip of Wayna performing the song in question with said billy club at last year's African American Heritage Festival in Baltimore:
