‘Soul Power’ Funkdafies Theatres Just Like It Did Zaire in ’74

I fancy myself an art house nerd, yet managed to miss this epic display of soulful Funk this weekend. (For the record I saw Brüno and felt as though my mind got sexually assaulted.) Epic fail for me, since I have been fiending for Soul Power since seeing the trailer earlier this year. Most of the reviews I've seen have been mixed, but I doubt any audiophile could deny this movie's dopeness. James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, and more performed amidst the backdrop of the legendary "Rumble In The Jungle." Although currently showing in only Los Angeles and New York City, everyone else hold tight and keep your eyes peeled for showings in your area.

  1. I REALLY want to see this. I'm going to be on the look out.

  2. I don't understand how this could not be unanimously heralded as dope unless the performances are given short shrift. That's all I care about. I don't need it to be a documentary as long as it's a concert film.
Feeling some kind of way inside about all the folks involved who are no longer with us.

  4. Thanks SB for the heads up!! We went to see this yesterday and its phenomenal! I had chills the entire time. Laughing, teared up, still can't get it out my mind... Ali, James Brown, Bill Withers! (They show the director of "When We Were Kings" who was also filming during this time) WOW. Its not a concert flick in the sense that you just get to watch music, its about the entire production of the event and the amazing energy that was swirling around all involved. I personally think that if anyone gives it a bad reveiw, they HATE music!! I admit that, sorta like the Dave Chappelle Block party (which I was at and then kinda bummed they didn't show what I thought were the best moments), you do kinda wish there was a bit more of the performances but that's not the point - they show u 1 song per performer and you're supposed to wish u were there! Plus u know they couldn't clear ALL that publishing to show u the entire 12 hours of the 3 day festival - we gotta just be happy it FINALLY came out! Go see it - and see it in the theater - the sound is amazing. (and you can buy the Zaire 74 t-shirts on the official Sony site!!)
