Remember a time not so long ago when an Usher video was a not-to-be-missed experience? Whether you watched for the dance moves or his dramatic interpretations, he had a good run in the late-'90s through the Confessions era. Well, those days are long gone and my excitement to see a new Usher video has waned--even with all the hype that may surround it, such as was the case with "Lil Freak" featuring rapstress du jour, Nicki Minaj. I already didn't like the tacky little ode to freak threesomes nor Minaj's presence on the track, so going into this video it already had two strikes against it and this clip was the third and final straw. This video could have given us an edgy eyeful filled with envelope-pushing sexiness, but what do we get? Yet another love in this club scene, unimaginative choreography and Nicki Minaj in a more-ridiculous-than-usual half-chocolate, half-vanilla wig. And is that the best that they could do for the female lead? I understand that she was supposed to play the innocent, but did she have to be boring and on the short end of the cute stick, too? Not even cameos from Ciara and Jamie Foxx could save this joint. Watch it once, then file it under FAIL.
