I can't tell the last time that I watched a beauty pageant in its entirety, but last night's Miss Universe competition had me riveted to my television screen for two reasons. The first was to cheer on Miss Jamaica, the stunner Yendi Phillipps, in her quest for the crown and, secondly, to see John Legend and The Roots perform. Yes, Johnny and the Legendary Roots Crew were relegated to performing background muzak during the evening gown competition, but they sounded damn good doing it on a program that was broadcast around the world no less. Although my yardie sistren came up short and didn't win the much-deserved title (hey, I'm Jamaican and biased, but she was the clear queen), this was a very good look for all parties involved.
